Daughter of addict frowns on her husband’s drinking

DEAR ABBY: My mother-in-law was a drug addict for most of my wife’s life. Because of this, my wife refuses to use any addictive substances, including alcohol. I enjoy having a beer or three occasionally. I never get drunk, just pleasantly tipsy. This happens maybe once a month. Every time I drink, she gets very judgmental, as if I’m some sort of alcoholic. I have tried talking to her about it when I’m not drinking. She claims she doesn’t care if I drink occasionally. Then as soon as I do, she rolls her eyes at me, sighs if I get ...

Sheriff: Amelia purse snatching suspect sought

St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office detectives are asking for the public's help to find a suspect in an early Saturday morning purse snatching in Amelia, a news release said.

At 1:30 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a purse snatching complaint at a business in Amelia. Upon arrival, the deputies made contact with business personnel and a female who had her purse snatched by a male subject who ran outside and fled on a white and pink bicycle. Moments later, another business patron made contact with the suspect but was unable to detain him, the release said.

Deputies canvassed the area and located the victim’s smashed Iphone8, her phone case, and other personal items. These items were located at an abandoned trailer in the 100 block of Friendship Alley in Amelia. Detectives were called to assist.

Through the investigation, detectives identified the suspect as Tommy Harding Jr. from Friendship Alley. If you see Harding or know the whereabouts of Harding, contact the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-828-1960 or 985-384-1622.

Tigers will travel to Archbishop Hannan for first-round matchup

Entering the Division III postseason, Morgan City High School Coach Trevor Patterson liked his draw as the No. 22 seed.
He said he feels that the Tigers will have a competitive match with No. 11 Archbishop Hannan, who they will face Saturday at 2 p.m. in Covington. If the Tigers are able to beat the Hawks, Morgan City will have a rematch against a Parkview Baptist squad Morgan City already has faced this season. Parkview Baptist, Division III’s No. 6 seed, received a first-round bye.
However, before Morgan City (7-2-3 overall, 2-5-1 in District 6-III) can worry about Parkview Baptist, Patterson said the Tigers must take care of business against Archbishop Hannan (14-6 overall, 4-2 in District 7-III).
“We feel it’s going to be a close game. We really do,” Patterson said of the Hannan contest.
Morgan City will enter the postseason not at full strength, however, as Patterson said defender Dylan Mayon is out for Saturday’s contest with an injury, while he said defender Dalexandro Hernandez also is injured, although Patterson said he hopes Hernandez can improve by Saturday.
However, Patterson said the Tigers have some players who can fill those voids.
Archbishop Hannan is led by senior Victory Harvey, who has 35 goals this season. Last year, Harvey won the Class 3A 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.64.
Hannan enters the postseason on a two-game losing streak having fallen to District 7-III foe Pearl River and Vandebilt Catholic in nondistrict play to end the season.
Morgan City and Hannan have two common opponents this season, Parkview Baptist and Vandebilt Catholic. Morgan City fell to Parkview Baptist 3-1 and to Vandebilt Catholic in league play by scores of 7-1 and 3-2. Hannan fell to Parkview Baptist 6-1 and Vandebilt Catholic 5-2.
Vandebilt Catholic is the No. 8 seed in Division III.
Among the other notable teams Hannan faced this season were Lusher Charter, who is the No. 7 team in the Division III postseason, Pope John Paul II, No. 6 in Division IV; St. Thomas Aquinas, No. 8 in Division IV and Dunham, No. 10 in Division IV. Hannan fell to Lusher in district play 1-0, beat Pope John Paul II 6-2, topped St. Thomas Aquinas 3-2 and took down Dunham 3-1.
Among the other notable teams Morgan City faced this year was Beau Chene, who is the No. 4 team in the Division II postseason; Terrebonne, No. 8 in Division II; and district foe E.D. White, No. 5 in Division III. Morgan City fell in all of those contests, dropping a 2-0 match to Beau Chene, a 5-3 contest to Terrebonne, and matches of 8-0 and 5-1 to E.D. White.

Defending champion Colonels land 8 on Preseason All-Southland Softball Team

Losing just one starter from last season’s championship squad, the Nicholls State University softball team had a league-high eight players named to the 2019 Preseason All-Southland Teams, which the conference office revealed Tuesday afternoon.
The Colonels also had a conference-best six first-team selections in addition to a pair on the second-team roster. Seven were automatic selections after earning All-Southland last season, and junior first baseman Samantha Dares was voted onto the preseason second team by the coaches.
Three-time All-Southland shortstop Amanda Gianelloni headlines a senior trio. Along with being one of the best defensive players in the conference, she hit .349 with five home runs and 34 RBIs. She is joined by two-time first-teamer Kasey Frederick and reigning Pitcher of the Year Megan Landry. Frederick led Nicholls with a .377 average, 16 doubles, 42 RBIs and was third in homers with seven. Landry, a Central Catholic High alum, finished 22-7 with a 1.94 ERA and 127 strikeouts a year ago.
Kali Clement, who transferred in last season, was the 2018 Newcomer of the Year and a second-team honoree as a utility player. Clement totaled 51 hits for a .321 average and was second on the team with eight dingers.
Rounding out the first-team selections are sophomores Jewel Lara and Kelsey Miller. At third base, Lara was the league’s Freshman of the Year last season and landed on the first team after batting .344 with 13 doubles and 24 RBIs. Miller started 47 games in the outfield and hit .315 with 29 runs scored as the leadoff hitter.
The two second-team recipients were pitcher Alexis LaBure and Dares. LaBure provided Nicholls with a lethal 1-2 punch in the circle, going 14-6 with a 2.52 ERA, five saves and 121 strikeouts. Dares tallied a .328 batting average with 10 doubles and two home runs.
The preseason all-conference teams are voted upon by the league’s head coaches. Returning players from the 2018 All-Conference First and Second teams automatically are named to the 2019 Preseason All-Conference teams at their respective positions. Second-team players are elevated to the first team if the first-team slot is vacated by a non-returning player at the same position.

Nicholls softball projected to win Southland Conference Title

Four shy of a unanimous 22 first-place votes, the Nicholls State University softball team was projected to win the Southland Conference as the league office announced its 2019 Preseason Poll Wednesday afternoon.
The Colonels, which went 40-15 and won the league title by three games with a 21-6 record a year ago, totaled 18 first-place votes out of 24, finishing with 238 points. McNeese, the three-time defending tournament championships, placed second with the remaining six votes and 224 points. The poll consists of votes from the league’s coaches and sports information directors, and they are not permitted to vote for their own team.
Nicholls’ roster features eight preseason all-conference selections, including six on first team. The Colonels also had three players earn superlative honors last season — Pitcher of the Year Megan Landry, Newcomer of the Year Kali Clement and Freshman of the Year Jewel Lara — and all three return for 2019. Landry, a Central Catholic High alum, is a 2019 Preseason All-SLC selection.
Following the Colonels and Cowgirls, Central Arkansas (164) edged Southeastern Louisiana for third by one point. Stephen F. Austin was next with 158 points, and the rest of the projected eight-team tournament field consisted of Northwestern State (156), Sam Houston State (145) and Abilene Christian (119). This year’s postseason tournament will be held in Natchitoches, hosted by Northwestern State.
The rest of the projections were Lamar (90), UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (40) and HBU (36).
Nicholls opens the season next weekend in the Lion Classic in Hammond. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Feb. 8.
