Close call, but no plans to open Morganza

Residents in the Morgan City area can breathe a sigh of relief as the region appears to have dodged a potentially serious flood. There are no plans to open the Morganza Floodway during this high-water event.

Authorities came close to meeting both main thresholds to operate the Morganza Floodway, which would have sent more water south to the Morgan City area, St. Mary Levee District Executive Director Tim Matte said during the district’s Thursday meeting at the Parish Courthouse.

One of the thresholds, a 57-foot water elevation at the Morganza structure, was met as the elevation has reached 58 feet. However, the other threshold, a flow of 1.5 million cubic feet per second at the Red River landing, wasn’t quite reached as the maximum flow hit 1.445 million cubic feet per second, Matte said.

“The good news is that flow rate has been consistent for the last five days, so I think that indicates that there’s nothing currently that should push that over (the threshold),” he said.

The Morganza Floodway has only been opened twice since construction was completed in the 1950s, once in 1973 and 2011.

On Thursday night, the Atchafalaya River at Morgan City reached near 8.3 feet, a height that is likely the crest. That level has necessitated the closure of several floodgates along the Morgan City and Berwick floodwalls. Levee district leaders have worked with other officials to address any issues with water overflowing onto the roadways along the area’s waterways.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the Atchafalaya will stay above 8 feet for the next few days.

St. Mary Levee District commissioners declared a state of emergency Thursday as a precautionary measure in case the district needs to handle any problems relating to the high water without having to call a special meeting. St. Mary Parish government had already called an emergency. St. Martin Parish did the same thing earlier this month to be able to effectively address potential flooding issues in the Stephensville area.

Officials determined a temporary closure of Bayou Chene in Amelia wasn’t necessary this time to prevent possible regional flooding. But once the levee district constructs its planned permanent floodgate on Bayou Chene, officials will close that gate when the Atchafalaya reaches 7 feet at Morgan City and is forecast to continue rising. The project to install the permanent Bayou Chene floodgate also includes work on nearby Avoca Island.

Water is currently over the road on Avoca Island. However, when the permanent floodgate project is complete, officials will be able to prevent water from surpassing the road, Matte said.

In other business, the commission approved a $5,000 contribution to the Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana for the Louisiana Flood Risk Coalition.

Fire destroys houseboat; Ex-school board member, family deal with second fire in 7 months

Former St. Mary Parish School Board member Bill McCarty and his family were able to escape an early Thursday morning fire from the one-room cypress houseboat they had been living in since their home sustained damage in a July 2018 fire.

“It’s kind of a shock,” McCarty said. “You certainly don’t expect anything like that to happen, let alone twice in seven months.”

One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation, and a firefighter was treated for a minor injury, Assistant Fire Chief John Price said.

During the July fire, McCarty’s wife was able to pick up a couple of things and get out.

“This time there wasn’t even time to do that,” McCarty said. “It was just a matter of hoping to get the door unlocked and get out.”

At 2:47 a.m. Thursday, the Morgan City Fire Department responded to a call of a fire at the houseboat at Lake End Park. The fire destroyed the houseboat, but the two occupants were able to escape safely, Price said.

A possible cause of the fire hasn’t been determined yet. Seventeen firefighters responded and cleared the scene by 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Price said. A couple of surrounding camps had minor damage.

On July 31, 2018, McCarty’s home on Cedar Street in Morgan City sustained heavy damage to a bedroom, and a cat died in a fire. In that fire, all of the people inside the home had escaped before firefighters arrived. The bedroom that was heavily damaged is believed to be where that fire started, but the cause hasn’t been determined, Chief Alvin Cockerham said.

Berwick alum Shelby Bergeron sets stolen base mark

Louisiana College softball swept a doubleheader with their in-state rival Centenary College Tuesday night at Wildcat Park, The Wildcats won with 10-3 and 2-1 wins against the Ladies.
The victories extend the Wildcats’ winning streak to six and pushed them to 12-5 this season.
Game 1
The first game got off to a sloppy start for both teams with errors in both the top and bottom of the innings leading to four unearned runs between the two teams. The Wildcats scored their two runs on a throwing error at first and a sacrifice fly from Abby Sterling that plated Briley Johnston.
The pitchers and defense settled down after that first inning, but the Wildcats began to pull away in the third when Taylor Hammock brought Berwick High alum Shelby Bergeron in on an RBI groundout.
Louisiana College starter Cameron Crochet retired eight batters in a row and gave the Louisiana College offense the chance to push the lead even more.
A base hit and a throwing error allowed two more runs to score in the fourth and a third came in on an RBI groundout from Johnston, making it 6-2 after four innings.
Centenary got a run back in the fifth, but that would be the last threat it would muster in the game.
The Wildcats almost ended the game early via the run-rule in the bottom of the fifth with two doubles to start the inning with Haley Vezinat’s plating the first run of the inning. A double steal added another, and a Sami Walters base hit made it 9-3 Wildcats.
Shaye Tredinich made it 10-3 with an RBI single up the middle, but the game-winning run would be left at third at the end of the inning.
Neither team threatened in the sixth or seventh.
While the game ended up being a big win for the Wildcats as a team, it was an even bigger moment for one of the Wildcat seniors.
Bergeron, the team’s leadoff hitter, became the Wildcats all-time leading base stealer, swiping her 78th base after reaching on a bunt single in the bottom of the first. She took over the spot from Stephanie Jaeger and added to her new record later in the game with another steal in the third.
Game 2
The second game ended up being tightly contested, with the Wildcats clinging to a slim lead the entire time and needing a clutch defensive play to secure the win.
The Wildcats took the early lead in the bottom of the first on an Abby Sterling base hit to right. They would go up 2-0 in the second on a double steal as Samantha Cetta took second, forcing a throw down, allowing Sami Walters to scoot home easily for the insurance run.
Centenary threatened to tie the game in the third, but a spot-on throw to third from Peyton Eschette cut the runner down trying to steal.
After 11 straight outs from both teams, Centenary caught a break after a ground out to first and a wild throw trying to get the runner at second went to left field wall and allowed the Ladies to get within one after four and a half innings.
The game stayed at 2-1 after six innings, with Madison Dykes going out to try and finish her first complete game of the season. A one-out single and throwing error put the tying run in scoring position at second.
A bunt single moved her to third and after a steal, put the go-ahead run at second. On a shallow fly ball to left, Briley Johnston came racing in for the diving catch and doubled up the runner at third to end the game, giving the Wildcats the dramatic 2-1 victory.
The Wildcats will travel to Clarksville, Arkansas, this weekend for their third American Southwest Conference road series of the season as they take on the University of the Ozarks Friday and Saturday.

No. 10 Ragin' Cajuns pull away late to defeat Colonels in softball

The Nicholls State University softball team played the No. 10 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns to a scoreless tie through four innings, but the Ragin’ Cajuns offense scored at least two runs in each of the final three frames as the Colonels suffered a rare loss at home 8-0 Wednesday night at Swanner Field.
Nicholls (12-13), which posted an 18-2 record in Thibodaux in 2018 and entered the night with a 50-6 mark at Swanner Field during the last three-plus seasons, was limited to just three hits. Amanda Gianelloni and Kali Clement both singled in the loss, while Emma Holland recorded her first double of the season.
Megan Landry (10-5) suffered the loss. After shutting down the Southland’s top offense last weekend, Landry, a Central Catholic alum, stifled one of the country’s top lineups by retiring the Cajuns in order in three of the first four innings. But in the fifth, the Ragin’ Cajuns’ Kourtney Gremillion snuck a liner down the first baseline for a run-scoring triple and then scored late in the inning for a 2-0 lead.
Louisiana doubled its advantage in the sixth on a two-run homer by Julie Rawls. With the wind howling out, she got a hold of a Landry pitch and drove it over the left-center wall. Landry left the game in the sixth, finishing with four earned runs on five hits while striking out five.
As impressive as Landry was in the early innings, Ragin’ Cajun pitcher Summer Ellyson had a dominating showing, too, striking out 11 Colonels in six innings. With the win, she improved to 14-3 this season.
In the seventh, the Ragin’ Cajuns doubled their lead again, thanks mostly to a 3-run homer by Kara Gremillion. Nicholls was retired in order in the bottom half to fall to under .500 this season.
CONFERENCE HOME OPENER
Nicholls welcomes University of Incarnate Word this weekend for its first Southland series at Swanner Field. Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m., with Saturday’s finale set for noon.

Morgan City pedestrian killed in Jeff Davis Parish crash

A Morgan City man walking beside I-10 in Jefferson Davis Parish was struck and killed Wednesday by an SUV that ran off the shoulder of the roadway, State Police Troop D spokesman Derek Senegal said in a news release.

The crash took the life of Donald Joseph Rock Jr., 41, of Morgan City. The driver of the SUV, Haeven Nicole Rashall, 24, of Eunice, was charged with driving under suspension and careless operation in the crash. Police suspect that drug impairment on the part of Rashall was a factor in the crash, Senegal said. Additional charges are possible.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on I-10 west of La. 395 in Jefferson Davis Parish.

The preliminary investigation revealed the crash occurred as Rock was walking west on I-10 on the right side in the grassy area. For unknown reasons, a 2005 Cadillac Escalade driven by Rashall ran off the right side shoulder of the roadway and struck Rock as he was walking in the grassy area, the release said.

Rock sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner’s Office, Senegal said. Toxicology samples were obtained from the driver and the pedestrian and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Rashall was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail.
