Patterson jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third inning and held off a late charge by Central Lafourche, who scored five runs in the top of the sixth.
Patterson Coach Matt Lipari said keeping teams from coming back against the Lumberjills has been problematic for the squad this year.

In the bottom of the third, Patterson loaded the bases with no outs and scored their first two runs via back-to-back walks by Gabby Marcel and Emma Marin.
Alexis Bernadou then followed with a bases-clearing double to deep leftfield that scored three more runs for a 5-0 Patterson lead. Kaylee Craddock concluded the scoring with a run-scoring single to right field for a 6-0 Patterson lead.

Although Patterson’s big third inning hurt Central Lafourche, runners stranded on base hurt the visitors even more.
Central Lafourche stranded runners in scoring position in six innings.
“We just need to learn that whenever we have base runners on, we have to execute,” Central Lafourche Coach Kayla Prater said. “We have to have a plan, and we got to execute it. Whatever it takes, we have to learn how to get runners on, get them over and get them in.”

Get It Growing: Now is the time to plant gardens

Despite the cool weather this month, the evidence of spring is all around us. Gardening March Madness begins!
This is one of the busiest times of year for the home gardener in the South. Outside, Japanese magnolias and eastern redbuds have bloomed along with azaleas.
Lawns are beginning to green up, and leaves are popping out on deciduous trees in the landscape. And the pollen — well, it’s everywhere! Ahchoo! Gesundheit!
First week, you want to begin preparing warm-season bedding and vegetable beds. Pull any weeds and turn the soil to loosen it. Remove any old plant roots and apply compost and mulch.
This is also a good time to apply dormant oils to camellias, citrus, sweet bay magnolias, banana shrub, gardenias and other shrubs or trees susceptible to scale, whitefly and other types of sucking insects.
Go ahead and fertilize established perennials and other landscape plants at this time to encourage vigorous spring growth as they begin to take off with the longer days and hopefully warming temperatures.
Black spot, powdery mildew and stem canker can be problems on roses along with pesky insects such as aphids, cucumber beetles, spider mites and thrips this time of year. Use a preventive spray program for pests and diseases on roses, and treat them every week in the early morning or late in the evenings to prevent foliage burn by chemicals.
Second week, begin mowing lawns on the lowest setting and remove the clippings. This is a great time to start herbs in both containers and beds with still-cooler temperatures.
Some great annual herbs are basil, cilantro, dill and mint. Get warm-season vegetable seeds such as cucumber, corn, cantaloupe, summer squash, snap beans, Southern peas, radishes and so on started.
Additionally, it is still a good time to plant hardy spring-flowering shrubs, container roses and flowering trees. Be sure that all new plantings are watered in adequately and mulched to prevent weeds and help retain soil moisture.
After March 15 in south Louisiana the threat of a late frost is less likely, go hog wild and plant those warm-season bedding plants and vegetables. You can plant tomatoes, peppers, eggplant transplants at this time. Hold off on okra transplants for a couple more weeks.
Warm-season bedding plants such as alyssum, begonia, blue daze, coleus, cosmos, dahlias, geraniums, impatiens, periwinkle, verbena and zinnia can go in the ground. Again, be sure to water these new plantings well and add mulch. And you can go ahead and use half-strength water-soluble fertilizer to give them a boost to start.
Fourth week, through early April in south Louisiana, you can fertilize St. Augustine grass and centipede grass. Work with garden center experts and consult manufacturers’ recommendations for application.
According to AgCenter expert Ron Strahan, “fertilizing too early with high nitrogen lawn fertilizer or weed and feed can contribute to winter kill with a late-season freeze and bring on brown patch disease.” So timing is important.
Some folks like to use a weed and feed combination that both fertilizes lawns while killing weeds for the convenience of application. However, this is not always the most effective for weed control.
March is also a good time to do a few other gardening tasks such as moving houseplants outside into a shady location when temperatures are warm enough. And go ahead and set out hummingbird feeders.
Enjoy all of those flowering shrubs and hold off on any pruning until the blooming period is over. Control the urge to prune growth damaged by winter freezes. Wait until the shrub has begun to grow again before pruning.
Prune summer-flowering shrubs such as althea, oleander and crape myrtle by the end of the month along with camellias that have completed their winter bloom. Be sure not to wait any later than May to prune camellias because new buds set in the summertime for the next winter bloom.

Online relationship stalls over meeting in person

DEAR ABBY: I met a really great guy online eight months ago. He lives in another country and we have been in a long-distance relationship for the last six months. We talk all the time, video chat frequently and have grown very close. I have never clicked with anyone like I have with him, and I know he feels the same. We are having a significant disagreement about meeting in person. I’m willing to travel to his country. The expense, while not negligible, is within my means. However, he says he has some serious ongoing health issues and he wants to ...

Officials work to prevent Stephensville flooding

As lower St. Martin Parish’s bayous sit full of water, parish leaders say many people have been working diligently to prevent flooding in the area.

Workers have been using pumps to get as much water as possible off the roadways in lower St. Martin Parish. Those pumps will stay on site so they can be used again, if needed, this spring, Parish President Chester Cedars said.

Despite pumping water to clear the roads, officials have had to close Four-Mile Bayou Road, Adell Street, Edna Street and Landry Lane to vehicle traffic, except for residents who live on those roads.

Officials expect to see a gradual decrease in the water levels along the Atchafalaya and Mississippi rivers during the next week or two.

The Atchafalaya River has been fluctuating between 8.1 feet and 8.3 feet at Morgan City during the past few days, said Roger Erickson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office. The Atchafalaya should stay above or near 8 feet through the end of this week and possibly into next week, Erickson said.

But south Louisiana hasn’t yet received the melted snow and ice from the north, which should bring more water south this spring. And authorities are hoping the region doesn’t get any major rain events during the next month that could add to the high water.

“We’ll be fighting this probably until June,” Cedars said.

Workers will perform maintenance on St. Martin Parish government automatic sandbagging and then begin stockpiling pre-filled bags to get ready for more high water in mid to late April, Cedars said.

“We were able to stay ahead of the game in Stephensville and Belle River since March 6, because we had … maybe (7,000) or 8,000 stockpiled bags of sand that we started accumulating way back in January in anticipation of what we might be seeing now,” Cedars said.

By the end of Monday, St. Martin Parish officials had distributed roughly 50,000 sand bags since March 6, Cedars said. St. Martin officials suspended the distribution of pre-filled sand bags Monday. Residents still in need of sand bags can get sand and bags at Stephensville Park on La. 70, but they must bring their own shovels and fill their own bags.

Cedars requests that all residents who have placed sand bags around their homes keep those bags in place with the likelihood of more high water arriving next month.

U.S. 90 bridge lane closure Wed. for inspection

The state Department of Transportation and Development will close the right lane of U.S. 90 east over the Atchafalaya River Wednesday for a routine bridge inspection. The closure is set for 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. weather permitting.
