Services Saturday for Tampico's founder

Maria Carmen Izaguirre of Morgan City, whose life journey led to the dance floor, the silver screen and the Tampico’s restaurants she founded, died Thursday, six days short of her 107th birthday.
Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Friday at Hargrave Funeral Home, with a rosary at 8:30 p.m. Visitation will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday with a 10:30 a.m. rosary.

Izaguirre, a native of Tampico in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, came first to the United States in Utah, where she opened a restaurant.
By the 1970s, she had moved to Morgan City and opened the first of what would be a string of restaurants in Bayou Vista, New Iberia and Lafayette.
“Carmen came to this country with a dream — to create a better life, and to fill a need with something deeply personal: her food,” her family wrote in her obituary. “With passion and determination, she built a culinary empire that not only fed the community but inspired countless others.”
She had also performed in regional competitions as a professional dancer and appeared in a few films.
Among her survivors are a son, Jose Luis Arias and wife, Guadalupe; a brother, Constancio Izaguirre and his wife, Elida; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren, and six great-great-great-grandchildren, and numerous godchildren, nieces and nephews.

U.S. 90 crash claims life of Centerville woman

A Centerville woman was killed in a Friday crash on U.S. 90 near La. 182, Louisiana State Police said.

The fatality was identified at Norma Clements, 86.

The state police account:

On June 13, 2025, just before 10:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two-vehicle serious injury crash on U.S. Highway 90 near its intersection with Louisiana Highway 182. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 86-year-old Norma Clements of Centerville.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Nissan Rogue, driven by Clements, was stopped facing south on LA Hwy 182 due to a stop sign at the intersection with U.S. Hwy 90. At the same time, a 2022 Ford F600 Super Duty pulling a trailer was traveling west on U.S. Hwy 90. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan attempted to continue south on LA Hwy 182 by crossing U.S. Hwy 90, but entered the path of the approaching Ford. Despite the driver of the Ford taking evasive action to avoid a collision, the truck struck the left side of the Nissan.

Clements was properly restrained, sustained severe injuries, and was transported to a local hospital where she later died. The driver of the Ford was uninjured.

The driver of the Ford was not suspected of being impaired and voluntarily provided a breath sample which showed no alcohol detected. A standard toxicology sample was collected from Clements and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make responsible choices when driving by avoiding impairment, fatigue, and distractions. While not all crashes are preventable, simple precautions like these can save lives.
