FPD Chief Beverly speaks to FHCC clients, staff

Franklin Health Care and Rehabilitation Center received an address from Franklin Police Chief Morris Beverly, Wednesday.
Vicky Landry, FHCC admissions coordinator, said she thought Beverly was well received by the staff of FHCC.
She reported that Beverly’s address focused on community involvement with a special concentration on first response to emergency situations.
The staff interacted with Beverly through a questions and answers session in which he explained how important it is to be prepared, safe and ready to take all emergencies seriously.
In regards to questions asked outside the parameters of emergency preparedness, Beverly remarked, “I do not make promises but each concern will be addressed.”
According to Landry, Beverly addressed a main concern of the facility: parked vehicles blocking or too near the fire hydrant which services the facility, a local school and residents.
Landry said that Beverly noted the seriousness of the matter and stated he would follow through with a resolution to the parking issue.
One staff member is said to have expressed at the end of Beverly’s presentation, “Things are a lot better now.”

Inclement weather halts Berwick-Sterlington game

Game will be concluded Sunday

No. 4 Berwick and No. 1 Sterlington played roughly half of their Class 3A semifinal Thursday at McMurry Park, but spent much of the day waiting due to lightning delays before the days’ action was called and postponed to Sunday.
The teams endured two lightning delays, the second of which ended the action for the day.
Now, the teams will meet Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on Field 40 at McMurry Park to conclude the contest.
Berwick and Sterlington were part of the day’s first contests, so all of Thursday’s action was postponed.
Because inclement weather was expected to continue in the area, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association made the decision to move the games to Sunday.
Berwick’s game was scoreless in the top of the fourth when it was halted. The Panthers were batting with one out and Hunter Landry facing an 0-2 count.
While Berwick has put every ball in play thus far, the Panthers have no hits and have had no baserunners.
“We’ve squared some ball up that just haven’t fallen,” Berwick Coach Brandon Bravata said.
Trey Rugg has struck out one in 3.1 innings.
Sterlington has one hit, a single to centerfield by Davis Johnson, and five base runners.
Three of those baserunners came in the bottom of the first when Berwick pitcher Zeph Hoffpauir had to work his way out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam. Hoffpauir did so with back-to-back strikeouts.
In three innings, Hoffpauir has surrendered one hit, walked two, hit two batters and fanned five.
“We got ourselves out of a jam early,” Bravata said. “I thought Zeph’s done a good job so far competing.”
Bravata said Thursday evening he wasn’t sure yet what Berwick would do, pitching wise, for the rest of the game, whether it would be bringing back Hoffpauir or using ace Seth Canty or turning to Mitchell Sanford.
“It’ll be something we’ll have to sit down and discuss and try to figure out,” he said.
Bravata said he expects Sterlington to pitch Rugg again Sunday.

Nicholls' Holland, Landry named Google Cloud Academic All-District

Nicholls State University softball infielder Emma Holland and pitcher Megan Landry have been named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District™ VI Softball Team, presented by CoSIDA, the organization announced Thursday afternoon.
The Academic All-District™ teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Holland has started every game at second base in her sophomore season and has a perfect 4.0-grade point average as a health sciences - pre-professional major. Landry, who earned academic all-America honors last year, has at 26-10 record in the circle and posted a 3.97 GPA en route to earning her degree in secondary education - English in December. The duo is the third and fourth all-district honorees under head coach Angel Santiago.
Holland is one of 25 honorees on the Division I all-district teams to maintain a 4.0 GPA. On the field, she has 44 hits for a .277 batting average and accounted for three doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs. She leads the Colonels with 34 runs scored and has 16 RBIs on the year.
An All-Southland First Team recipient, Landry, a Central Catholic alum, has been one of the NCAA’s best pitchers after ending the year tied for eighth in victories. Following her 10th shutout of the year in the Colonels’ first game of the postseason, Landry lowered her ERA to 1.66 for the season. Her victory set the program record for career wins at 79 and it was the 25th complete game of her senior campaign.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with first- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees to be announced in June.

Lack of timely hitting dooms CCHS in 3-1 loss to OCS

Central Catholic received enough quality pitching and solid defense to win Wednesday’s Division IV semifinal contest against top-seed Ouachita Christian.
What the Eagles lack, however, was timely hitting, which ultimately sealed the team’s fate in a 3-1 loss.
Central Catholic (22-11) left one runner apiece in scoring position in the first, second and third innings, but Ouachita Christian pitcher Ty Pankey and his defense were able to come away unscathed.
In the fourth, the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs but could only manage one run via a ball to the backstop that Carter Williams scored on.
“This game came down to the opportunities we had earlier in the game and just didn’t take advantage of them,” Central Catholic Coach Tyler Jensen said. “We talked about it all year. The way to win baseball games, especially in the postseason is pitch, play defense, get timely hits.”
While the Eagles struggled to score, pitcher Luke Barbier kept the Eagles in the game as he allowed just a double off the centerfield wall in the first four innings and fanned five.
In the top of the fourth, Central Catholic loaded the bases with no outs after back-to-back singles by Williams and Barbier and Hunter Daigle reached safely on a bunt that stayed fair.
During Caleb Menina’s at bat, Williams came home when a pitch got to the backstop.
However, that was all the Eagles could get as Menina hit a rocket but right to the first baseman, Grant Stansbury reached on an error, but Daigle was tagged out at second base and then Brooks Thomas, who made two great defensive catches, flied out to left field.
In the bottom of the fifth, Ouachita Christian (32-5) tied the game at 1 when Connor Mulhern doubled down the left field line to score a run.
Ouachita Christian took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs.
With one out, Bailey Burtram doubled to the leftfield wall, and the Eagles elected to intentionally walk Clint Hargrave.
Barbier hit the next batter, Dale Fulmer, to load the bases and then hit the following batter, Cole Hathaway, after the Eagles’ pitcher had battled back from a 3-0 count for a 3-2 count, to give Ouachita Christian a 2-1 lead.
The next batter, Hunter Herring, singled to left field to score another run, and Jensen brought in Menina in relief.
Menina struck out the first batter and got the second to fly out to Daigle in left field.
“Credit to Luke and Menina, the job they did on the mound,” Jensen said. “Credit to our defense. We just didn’t get enough big hits. That’s just what it came down to.”
Barbier pitched 5.1 innings and surrendered three earned runs on five hits with one walk, two hit batters and five strikeouts.
Menina pitched 0.2 innings and fanned one.
After running into some trouble early on, Pankey settled in after the fourth inning and retired nine straight Eagles to end the game.
In seven innings, he surrendered one unearned run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Offensively, Barbier led Central Catholic with a 2-for-3 performance with a double.
Meanwhile, Mulhern led Ouachita Christian with a 1-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI.
Other top Ouachita Christian contributors were Hargrave, 1-for-2 with a double and a run; Burtram, 1-for-3, a double and a run; and Hathaway and Herring, each 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Wednesday’s game was the final one for Central Catholic’s seniors, Thomas, Bryce Grizzaffi, Hunter Daigle and Sammy Spitale.
“They were a great group of guys,” Jensen said. “What I told them is they’ve done a really good job with this team. A lot of people doubted us, especially later in the year, about what we would be able to accomplish. They did a good job holding this team together, and they won a lot of games together. They’ve made three state tournament appearances. They’ve won a state championship. They got a state runner-up. You can’t argue with those results.”
While the Eagles do return quite a bit of talent next year, regardless, Jensen said that the goal is always to win a state title.
“For a little while, we’ll sit back and enjoy the success we had this year, but at the same time, I told them after we need to remember how this feels, because we were a couple plays away from winning this and having another shot at one (a state title),” he said.

Landry sets wins record as Colonels roll past Lady Demons

The Nicholls State University softball team turned in a dominating performance in its first game of the 2019 Southland Conference Tournament with a 9-0 run-rule victory against host Northwestern State Wednesday afternoon at Lady Demon Diamond.
The No. 2 seed Colonels (33-20) now will square off against top-seed Sam Houston State Thursday at 11 a.m. for a spot in Friday’s championship. The Bearkats won the series in Thibodaux, two games to one, but all three games were decided by a run.
In the win against Northwestern State, Central Catholic alum and Nicholls senior Megan Landry recorded her 10th shutout of the season and earned career win No. 79, setting a new program record. The previous mark was held by Laura Davis, who played from 1982-85. Landry’s season record now is 26-10, and she lowered her ERA to 1.66.
Wednesday, Landry allowed four hits and struck out five in five innings.
On offense, the Colonels scored two runs in the second inning, two in the third, and then blew the game open with five in fifth. Caitlin Garcia put the run-rule into effect after blasting a three-run homer for the 9-0 lead. Garcia paced the Colonels with five RBIs, thanks to two sacrifice flies earlier in the contest.
Kasey Frederick and Samantha Dares accounted for half of the Colonels’ eight hits with two each.
Northwestern State (30-26) had a chance to get to Landry early by putting runners on second and third with one out, but the Colonel ace recorded the first of her five punch outs before forcing a groundout to end the threat.
In the bottom of the second, Kali Clement started the frame with a blooper to right and legged out a double. She then scored on Garcia’s first sacrifice fly, and Nicholls added to the lead when Samantha Mracich beat out an infield single and the throw flew past first base, allowing another runner to score.
Northwestern State struggled defensively all game, recording five errors, which led to six unearned runs.
Nicholls doubled the advantage in the third when Melise Gossen snuck a single down the first-base line for an RBI, and Garcia followed with another sacrifice fly.
Then in the fourth, two scored when Kasey Frederick singled to center with two on. The first runner scored on the hit, and then Amanda Gianelloni came home after an errant throw to the plate.
With Nicholls leading 6-0 in the inning, Garcia launched a 1-0 offering over the left-center wall for her sixth homer of the season.
In the fifth, Landry gave up two singles with two down before ending the game with a liner to Corynn Major in left field.
Elise Vincent led Northwestern State with a 3-for-3 day at the plate.
E.C. Delafield suffered the loss after lasting three innings and surrendering two earned runs on five hits. Delafield had a strong start, fanning all three Colonels in the first inning.
