Southeastern baseball opens fall practice Monday

The Southeastern Louisiana baseball program opened its six-week fall practice period Monday with an afternoon practice session at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Coach Matt Riser’s ball cub returns 12 lettermen and five redshirts off the 2019 squad. Joining the returning players in fall camp are 25 newcomers, including 14 freshmen. The influx of newcomers was brought about by a senior-laden club this past spring.
“The core of our recruiting classes are usually based off high school guys,” Riser said in a news release. “We tend to be more consistent and sustainable as a program when we have a good high school class. In our situation, with such a large senior class last year, we also needed to get some transfers that can make immediate impacts. Our staff did a great job of addressing both.”
Returning for the Lions are pitchers, Hunter Arnold, Corbin Bozosi, Kyle Flettrich, Noah Hughes, Justin Simanek, Grant Upton and Will Warren; catchers Connor Manola and Greg Thompson; infielders, Trey Harrington and Eli Johnson; and outfielders, Preston Faulkner, Darius Jones and Nick Ray. They are joined by Trey Shaffer, Brant Husser and Trey Jolly, multi-position players who split time between the outfield and the mound.
In the incoming group are three JUCO national champions, three high school All-Americans and a transfer that previously was named one of the top pro prospects in the Southland Conference by D1Baseball.com. Based on Perfect Game’s recruiting rankings, 18 players were in the Top 1,000 nationally coming out of high school. Included in the number are four players in the Top 500 and one in the Top 250.
“They’ve been really mature, taking care of their business,” Riser said in the release of the newcomers. “The maturity of an individual speaks more so than their age. This group has the opportunity to be that next class to leave their mark at Southeastern for years to come.”
Among the newcomers is Central Catholic High alum and Southeastern freshman Bryce Grizzaffi.
This fall, intrasquad scrimmages are planned for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The team will return to a drill-oriented practice Thursday at 3:30 p.m. All of the fall scrimmages and workouts at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field are free and open to the public. Practice schedule updates will be announced on the baseball program’s Twitter account, @LionUpBaseball.

St. Stanislaus defeats CCHS, 28-21

A big fourth quarter from Max Favre, nephew of NFL legend Brett Favre, and his receivers was enough to propel St. Stanislaus to a 28-21 comeback victory against Central Catholic Friday at Tiger Stadium in Morgan City.
Trailing 21-14 as the fourth quarter began, Favre and his receivers stepped up big. First, the senior quarterback hooked up with Bradley Darby (two catches, 53 yards) for a 33-yard touchdown pass down with 8:32 remaining to tie the game at 21 following the extra point.
On the Rock-a-Chaws’ next possession, it was Dallas Payne (seven catches, 130 yards), who came up big. The senior receiver caught a pass and broke several tackles en route to a 52-yard touchdown with 4:10 remaining to put St. Stanislaus (3-2) ahead for good.
Central Catholic (1-2) drove to the Rock-a-Chaws’ 26-yard-line before Eagles quarterback Ryan Miller (4-of-9, 105 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions) was picked off in the end zone by Trustin Northington with under two minutes remaining.
With the Eagles out of timeouts, Favre took a knee twice to run out the remaining minute-plus of regulation. Northington had two interceptions in the fourth quarter for St. Stanislaus.
Favre finished the night 16-of-28 for 238 yards and four touchdowns through the air. He threw three touchdowns in the second half, including a 17-yard pass to Payne that gave the Rock-a-Chaws their first lead of the night at 14-7 with 2:48 remaining in the third quarter.
“We’re really proud of the way those guys played in the fourth quarter,” St. Stanislaus Coach Nate Encrapera said. “I knew Central Catholic was going to be a really well-coached football team. I also knew that Tommy (Minton) would do a good job of getting their guys ready, play really sound in their schemes and play hard for four quarters, and they did.”
Central Catholic was in the game all night long and led for much of the way. The Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter when Miller completed a 17-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal to Freddie Calloway for a 7-0 lead at the 8:02 mark after Adlai Urbina’s extra point.
Davidyione Bias had two touchdown runs in the second half, including one on a 53-yard run late in the third quarter. Bias finished the night with 31 carries and 140 yards and two touchdowns along with one catch for 24 yards.
“You look at it and we didn’t tackle,” Minton said of the fourth quarter. “(Payne) ran hard with the ball in his hands, and then offensively, we had a few miscues. You take it and look at it and we’re both two really good football teams. I don’t think it’s a situation where you throw in the towel. We’re going to look at the tape and get better from it.”
Central Catholic finished with 13 first downs and 295 yards of total offense to St. Stanislaus’s seven first downs and 292 yards.
Central Catholic will return to action Thursday when it travels to face two-time defending Division IV state runner-up Ascension Catholic.

While Patterson trailed just 14-7 at halftime, South Terrebonne scored touchdowns on its first two drives of the second half for a 28-7 lead. The Gators added another touchdown in the fourth quarter for a 35-14 advantage. South Terrebonne’s second-half scores came via a 13-yard pass from Christian Arceneaux to Peyton Parr. Shea Pitre, who was five-of-five on point-after attempts, made the extra point for a 21-7 South Terrebonne lead. After forcing a Patterson three-and-out on its next possession,

Berwick High School Panthers fall to Rayne High School Wolves, 16-6

Berwick and Rayne went toe-to-toe with the game on the line Friday at Geisler Stadium in Berwick. But the Panthers were plagued with six turnovers that sparked the Wolves to a 16-6 win. “We were in this game, and we had that second-half on-sides kick in our hands and dropped it,” Berwick Coach Mike Walker said. “We also had too many penalties and turnover to beat a solid team like Rayne.” The teams were tied at 6 at halftime, and Walker decided to call the on-sides kick to open the second half. “I thought we needed something positive, and we had the ball in ...

Hanson defeats MCHS 12-3 in nondistrict action in Franklin

Hanson Memorial High School defeated Morgan City High School 12-3 in a low-scoring nondistrict contest in Franklin Friday.
Hanson took a 6-0 lead into halftime as the Tigers’ Donald Foulcard jarred the ball loose from Morgan City’s Lorenzo Johnson two plays into the second quarter and returned the loose football 62 yards for a touchdown with 11:35 remaining in the first half. Hanson’s two-point conversion pass by quarterback Collin Faucheaux was no good, and the home team led 6-0.
Morgan City got on the board on its first possession of the third quarter as the squad recovered an onside kick and then moved the ball to the Hanson 16. On fourth down, the Tigers’ Helder Hernandez connected on a 32-yard field goal with 7:51 remaining to cut the Morgan City deficit to 6-3.
However, Hanson responded on its opening drive of the third quarter as the Tigers moved the ball 80 yards on a lengthy drive that was capped by Faucheaux’s 5-yard run with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. Hanson’s two-point conversion attempt was no good, and Hanson led 12-3.
While Morgan City was limited to three points, the Tigers had the ball in Hanson territory often. The visitors simply just couldn’t finish drives.
Morgan City finished the game with 197 yards of offense (112 rushing and 85 passing).
Johnson led Morgan City’s ground game with 12 carries for 63 yards.
Morgan City’s Kane Sanchez completed 4 of 7 passes for 49 yards, while Khai Hartley was 4 of 11 passing for 36 yards with an interception.
Morgan City’s top receivers were Shemar Naverre with two receptions for 35 yards, while Taaj Delaune had two catches for 34 yards.
Hanson had 280 yard of offense (232 rushing and 48 passing).

Teche Regional becomes Ochsner St. Mary

Goodbye, Teche Regional Medical Center. Hello, Ochsner St. Mary.

State and local officials, St. Mary Chamber members and Ochsner Health System executives held a ribbon-cutting Tuesday to mark Ocshner’s new role as the operator of Morgan City’s 165-bed hospital. The name change is part of the deal, but far from the biggest part.

The Louisiana-based Ochsner will succeed LifePoint Health, which last year announced it wanted to give up management of the hospital.

St. Mary Parish Hospital Service District No. 2, which owns the hospital, negotiated the new lease agreement with Ocshner. The agreement was approved by the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office last week.

“I pledge that the city government will be a partner and do what it takes to make this a success,” Morgan City Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi told a gathering in the hospital’s meditation garden.

“Not having a hospital here in Morgan City and St. Mary Parish was never an option ...,” Parish President David Hanagriff said. “If we want our economy to grow, we have to have this hospital.”

The hospital’s new Ochsner CEO, Fernis LeBlanc, said Ocshner will put an effort into recruiting new physicians and will implement the EPIC electronic medical records system.

“It’s going to provide unprecedented access to patient information,” LeBlanc said.

He also promised that employees will have the chance to talk about their concerns and ask questions at upcoming town hall meetings.
