Blaze damages Patterson home

Staff Report
The cause of a Patterson fire that took multiple agencies to extinguish Monday afternoon remains unknown, Patterson Volunteer Fire Chief Scott Hutton said Tuesday morning.
While no injuries were reported in the blaze, he said, a dog perished in the fire at 112/114 Enterprise St.
The Patterson Volunteer Fire Department was called to the fire about 2:10 p.m., and when the first unit arrived, heavy smoke and fire were encountered at the home, according to a report on the department’s Facebook page.
Bayou Vista and Centerville volunteer fire departments were called for mutual aid, while Berwick and Morgan City Fire departments later were called to help due to the temperatures Monday afternoon, the report said.
The fire was brought under control by about 4:30 p.m., and the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department was back in service by 5:30 p.m.
About 40 responders and eight apparatus, including an Acadian Ambulance unit, responded.

St Mary registrar of voters is retiring

Registrar of Voters Jolene Holcombe is expected to formally announce her retirement at Wednesday’s St. Mary Parish Council meeting.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Mary Parish Courthouse in Franklin.
As registrar, Holcombe has directed and maintained voter registration records in St. Mary.
The Registrar of Voters Office also serves as the site for early voting.
Also Wednesday, the council is likely to discuss the care at the parish’s animal shelter.
Janelle Yates of Rescue Revolutions is scheduled to appear at the meeting.
Rescue Revolutions is a Houma-based organization that rescues pets in danger of being euthanized and tries to find homes for them.
Care at the shelter has become an issue at recent meetings, especially after a local animal care advocate posted photos of animals with wounds and injuries at the shelter.
Council members have defended care and conditions at the shelter. Fees don’t cover the expenses at the shelter, they say, and the parish government subsidizes the facility with more than $200,000 from the general fund each year. Veterinary care is provided, they say, although it is sometimes delayed because care isn’t immediately available.
The Wednesday agenda also includes a presentation from Lonnie Easley, campaign manager the United Way of South Louisiana.
Easley will talk about the kickoff of the United Way’s fundraising campaign Aug. 12.

The Broken Chain
We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

In addition, OMC was nationally ranked as one of the nation’s top 50 in Neurology and Neurosurgery (ranked #31) in the new 2021-22 Best Hospitals rankings published online today. This is also the 10th consecutive year that OMC has been nationally ranked among the Best Hospitals in America in Neurology and Neurosurgery and is the only nationally ranked hospital in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Also announced Tuesday was OMC’s distinguished “High Performing” ranking in Gastroenterology and Gastroenterology Surgery.
OMC is the largest facility in Ochsner Health’s system of 40 hospitals and more than 200 clinics and urgent care centers across Louisiana, Mississippi, and west Alabama. In June, Ochsner Hospital for Children was nationally ranked among the country’s top 2021-22 Best Children’s Hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report.
and was also named, for the first time, the #1 children’s hospital in Louisiana. Ochsner Hospital for Children is the only children’s hospital in Louisiana or Mississippi to be nationally ranked among the top 50 children’s hospitals in the country and has received this distinction for five consecutive years.
The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures. OMC is proud to have now been nationally ranked by U.S. News for 23 years and this year’s ranking in Neurology and Neurosurgery is its highest since 2017.
“Ochsner is committed to improving the health of the state and the region. The importance of neuro-logical health will only expand with our growing and aging population,” said Cuong “C.J.” Bui, MD, chair of neurosurgery, Ochsner Health. “Delivering high quality care for patients with complex and challenging brain, spine, and nerve disorders year in and year out is how we will help to move the needle forward.”
For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. In the 15 specialty areas, 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.
The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
“This year’s expanded report from U.S. News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help each patient pick the right hospital for the type of care they need,” said Ben Hard-er, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today.”
