Wife dislikes husband’s other love: his marijuana

DEAR ABBY: I have been with my husband for seven years, and I’m tired of having the same fight every day. He smokes marijuana, and I hate it.
It has been a constant battle for years. We tried therapy, which helped for a while, but he goes back to smoking behind my back. We tried to reach a compromise that he smoke only after a certain time of day, but it still leads to fights.
He shuts me out when he’s doing drugs and says I don’t care about his happiness because it’s something he enjoys, and I am taking it away. I love him so much, but I hate drugs and don’t like who he becomes when he’s smoking.
I want to have a baby, but I am uncomfortable with drugs being in the house. I feel like I can’t trust him to be alone with a baby when he’s high.
I don’t want to leave him, but I can’t take it anymore. Having the same fight every day is exhausting, and it’s had a really negative impact on our marriage.
I want him to choose me over this, but if I give him an ultimatum, he’ll hate me.
What do I do?
ANTI-DRUG IN ILLINOIS

DEAR ANTI-DRUG: Give your husband that ultimatum and pack your bags.
If you prefer the father of your child not have a marijuana habit and he cannot quit, then, as much as you may love him, this person isn’t The One for you. Sorry.

DEAR ABBY: I’ve read your column for years, frequently taking advice you provide to others and applying it to my circumstances.
I have developed a mutual bond with a woman who is 30 — 28 years younger than myself. She’s a waitress at a diner I frequent. I’ve seen her children grow over the past six or seven years.
We have had many meaningful conversations and shared our highs and lows. She’s naturally friendly.
Three or four years ago, she began sharing casual side hugs when I arrived. I never ask for them.
Over the last year, these hugs have become more intimate, not in a sexual way — just a deeper bond of friendship. We occasionally IM when she’s off work, but I don’t see her socially.
Lately she has been teasing that she’ll be my next ex. I reciprocate the flirting and teasing.
I believe there is a mutual attraction. If not for the age difference, which I’m OK with, or the fear of causing issues with our friendship, I’d ask her out.
Societal taboos weigh heavily on my mind, and I am pragmatic. Should I or shouldn’t I? Or am I reading too much into our friendship?
UNSURE IN THE MIDWEST

DEAR UNSURE: Not having witnessed the chemistry between the two of you, I couldn’t say.
However, nothing ventured, nothing gained. The next time you see her, after one of those “more intimate” hugs, tell her teasingly that you have been thinking about her comment that she’ll be your next ex and ask if she’d like to have dinner with you sometime.
Her response will tell you if you have been reading too much into the friendship.

'Active shooter' hoax comes to St. Mary; Morgan City schools locked down

The active shooter hoaxes that have afflicted many states this week came to St. Mary Parish on Thursday, the Sheriff's Office said.

One of a series of similar threats that have appeared from Oregon to Virginia came in to the Morgan City Police Department, saying an active shooter was at Berwick Junior High and on Berwick High School's nonexistent second floor.

Law enforcement officers from the Berwick Police Department and the Sheriff's Office were already at the school, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Morgan City Police Department said in a Facebook post that at about 1 p.m., officers received a call from a subject stating that there was an active shooter on the second floor of Berwick High. school. The subject had mentioned Berwick Junior High School and then made reference to Berwick High School.

Authorities with the Berwick Police Department were alerted to the situation. The schools were placed on lock down and cleared safe, the MCPD said.

All schools, both public and private, were also put on lock down in Morgan City when officers went to each school and cleared them safe. All schools have been released from lock down status and are back to normal activity.

Interim Chief Mark E. Griffin Jr. and the Morgan City Police Department commended the staffs at all of these schools. "We want everyone to know that we take these threats seriously, as the safety of all of our children is of the most importance," the department said.

The investigation of the origin of the call is ongoing, and the public will be notified as information is developed. The Louisiana State Police reported that similar active shooter hoax calls have appeared in other states, including Arkansas, California, Florida, Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia.
.
Nevertheless, the SMPSO and other law enforcement agencies have personnel checking on schools, assessing and securing the campuses to ensure the safety of our educators and students, the Sheriff's Office said.

(Editor’s note: The charges listed here and the narratives that go with them are provided by the police agencies that made the arrests. Guilt or innocence has not been determined in court.)

Morgan City police arrested a man accused of possessing methamphetamine fashioned to look like prescription medication.

St. Mary deputies made four arrests Wednesday, all involving some form of battery. Franklin police also reported a battery arrest.

Morgan City

Interim Police Chief Mark E. Griffin Jr. reported that the Morgan City Police Department responded to 45 calls for service over the last 24-hour reporting period and made these arrests:

—Harold Wayne Clark, 42, Terrebonne Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 12:31 a.m. Thursday on charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, improper lane usage and no driver’s license.

Investigators with the Morgan City Police Department Narcotics Division initiated a traffic stop on U.S. 90 in Morgan City. Clark was identified as the operator of the vehicle.

According to reports, Clark was found to be in possession over 269 pills that were fashioned to appear to be prescription medication. These pills were actually found to be suspected methamphetamine. Evidence was uncovered that these pills were destined for illicit sales.

Clark was also found not to have a valid driver’s license. Clark was arrested and transported to the Morgan City Jail, where he was booked and processed.

Griffin and the Morgan City Police Department said they want to make our great citizens aware of the techniques being used in today's world. Things are not always what they seem to be. Dealers are always trying to invent new ways to avoid detection by law enforcement.

"These pills contained suspected methamphetamine," the department said. "But they could have contained anything such as Fentanyl, which is a very deadly substance. We want to keep our public educated on these latest techniques, as it may save someone's life."

—Adam Wade Roy, 36, Chennault Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 12:42 a.m. Wednesday on two counts of failure to appear to pay fine (6th Ward Morgan City Court).

—Samuel Paul Gary, 31, Egle Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of domestic abuse battery.

Second threat investigation at Berwick High in two days

A second possible threat in as many days brought police back to Berwick High on Thursday for an investigation "out of an abundance of caution," the Sheriff's Office reported on behalf of the Berwick Police Department.

At about 10:13 a.m. officers with the Berwick Police Department were dispatched to Berwick High School to investigate a possible threat to public safety. "Upon arrival, officers observed a comment that had been written on a desk which was vague and not specific to the school," the Sheriff's Office said.

Officers conducted an investigation and no threats towards the school or students were identified.

The Berwick Police Department thanked the SMPSO and the Berwick Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance.

On Wednesday, the administration of Berwick High School, Berwick police and school resource officers investigated concerns of social media postings of a threatening nature against the school overnight, St. Mary Superintendent Dr. Teresa Bagwell said in a press release.

Following safety protocols, the school was ordered on a cautionary status throughout the investigation that resulted in a finding that the posts were
uncorroborated, Bagwell said.

"Officials from the school and law enforcement were able to decipher through various reports that one student had indeed purposefully provided inaccurate information to create unnecessary anxiety among the student body," Bagwell wrote. "Understandably, any comment, social media interaction, or other means of communication wherein a threat against students, staff, or a school is made will prompt a full-scale investigation and accountability of anyone involved.

"Safeguarding the educational setting is paramount and any acts to disrupt or impede a school campus will result in enforcement of the laws and regulations associated with such acts. Anyone with information regarding breaches to the safety and security of a school is asked to immediately report such information and act responsibly in assisting personnel throughout the investigation and resolution process."

According to the juveniles, Carter grabbed one of the juveniles by the arm and eventually got a baseball bat from her vehicle and threatened to hit them with it.

The deputy also spoke to a school employee, who stated that he stepped in between the juveniles and Carter in order to keep them from being hit.

Subsequently, the deputy made contact with Carter at her residence. Carter was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. Bail was set at $6,000.

UPDATED WITH STORY: Burt and Jodi Adams named Leaders in Philanthropy

Alice Pecoraro remembered the days 40 years ago when she was the Central Catholic guidance counselor for student Burt Adams.

"Little did I know the engineer would become a teacher,” Pecoraro said.

Adams did indeed become an engineer, and eventually returned to Central Catholic to teach.

Now Pecroraro and Adams have something in common other than their time at the local high school. On Thursday, the Community Foundation of Acadiana named Burt and Jodi Adams as 2022 St. Mary Leaders in Philanthropy, an honor William and Alice Pecoraro received in 2018.

“They have supported more good causes for this community than I could list,” Pecoraro said at the awards event at the Petroleum Club of Morgan City.

Adams received his civil engineering degree from Tulane, and he married his high school sweetheart, Jodi, who attended Morgan City High and earned a nursing degree from what is now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

They moved to Houston, where he worked for Raymond International, and she was a nurse at Methodist Hospital. When he was transferred to Malaysia, she became nursing manager for a Vietnamese refugee camp.

Then Burt Adams moved on to Harvard for his master of business administration degree, while Jodi Adams was a nurse at the university’s infirmary.

They have three children, Colby, Rachel and Chelsea. After holding a number of executive positions with oilfield-related companies, Burt Adams is president and CEO of OGRS LLC.

They credit their parents, Red and Yvonne Adams and Joe and Susie Sanford, with teaching them the value of philanthropy.

Their volunteer and charitable work has included:

—Supporting Central Catholic Elementary and High School. She has worked as the auction chair, and he has chaired the Board of Directors and Finance Committee. Burt Adams also became a Central Catholic teacher of physics, chemistry and calculus for more than 10 years.

—Supporting Pharr Chapel United Methodist Church for 25 years. She has chaired the Church Council, and he has chaired the Finance Committee.
Jodi Adams also worked as mission coordinator for medical and construction trips to Mexico, Costa Rica, the Red Bird Mission in the Appalachians, the Choctaw Reservation in Mississippi and Heifer International in Arkansas.

—Supporting St. Mary Outreach, Lakewood Foundation, Manresa House of Retreats, Holy Cross Church, Project Graduation for east St. Mary high schools, Tulane, Harvard and UL Lafayette.

The Community Foundation of Acadiana also named these Leaders in Philanthropy across the region:

—Sandy and Wayne Melancon, Acadia

—Linda and Charles Buller, Evangeline

—Lillian and Ernest P. Breaux Jr., Iberia

—Elaine and Richard Zuschlag, Lafayette

—Peggy and Dr. Albert Huguet, St. Landry

—Jennifer and Glenn Angelle, St. Martin
