Complications of rediscovered high school love

DEAR ABBY: After being divorced for 18 years, I have reconnected with my high school sweetheart. She got in touch with me, and we started talking and seeing each other. She says she loves me, and to be honest, I love her, too. The problem is, she’s married. She has grown kids and is raising her 8-year-old granddaughter. She says she’s sorry about what happened to us years ago and that she and her husband have had nothing in common for the past 16 years. They sleep in separate rooms and don’t do anything as a family.
I know it was wrong to get involved with her because she’s married. I asked her why now and why me. She said it’s because she never stopped loving me and had tried to find me in the past. (I work in construction and have been in different places over the years.) I told her I don’t want to break up her home, but she insisted that she’s not happy. She told me that a few years ago she moved out but returned because of the granddaughter. We are both in our early 60s. I’m not sure what to do. I know we have fun together, and I haven’t laughed this much in a very long time. I have been with others but never like this.
Help!
LONGTIME LOVE IN FLORIDA

DEAR LONGTIME LOVE: Tell your lady friend you care for her, but what’s going on isn’t fair to you or her husband. She has some important decisions to make about her future — and possibly yours.
Would her husband raise the grandchild if she left? Could she take the girl with her? Do you want to help raise the child?
Unless you plan to sneak around until her granddaughter is no longer a minor, stop laughing and get serious.

DEAR ABBY: I am a 48-year-old divorced mother of one adult child and one teenager. I suffered years of abuse at the hands of my toxic ex-husband, and I’m finally enjoying life for the first time in more than 20 years.
My elderly parents were also abusive, so my relationship with them is limited.
My parents think I’m going to take care of them when they can no longer care for themselves, but when my son graduates in a few years, I want to move away. I have offered to help, but they insist I should be willing to do more when the time comes.
My parents are on Social Security and have little money. My only sibling is worthless and abusive as well, and I know he won’t do anything.
What’s your advice?
EYE ON FUTURE IN OHIO

DEAR EYE: If your parents had children in order to guarantee they would be taken care of in their old age, they were misguided. Having children is no guarantee.
That they now live on a limited income is their issue; do not allow them to make it yours.
I assume you have warned them that you will be able to give them limited financial help and that you plan to leave the area.
Let your children know what has been going on. Impress upon them the importance of planning for financial independence early on, and if you haven’t already, start saving for your own retirement because children often emulate what they see their parents do.
Make your parents aware that there may be programs to help them lower costs in many areas, enabling them to stretch their dollars. AARP has a state-by-state breakdown on help for low-income seniors. (Go to aarp.org and search “Public Benefits — Senior Assistance.”)

Thibodaux Regional says it will appeal ruling on Houma clinics

Thibodaux Regional Health System said Monday that it will appeal last week's court ruling that could force the system to cease treating patients at two Houma clinics.

District Judge Jason Degate of Terrebonne Parish's 32nd Judicial District Court issued an injunction prohibiting Thibodaux Regional from operating the urgent care and multispecialty clinics on St. Charles Street in Houma.

Degate stayed his order until May 5 to allow patients to seek care elsewhere.

The ruling came in a lawsuit filed by Terrebonne Parish Hospital Service District No. 1 against Thibodaux Regional and Lafourche Parish Hospital District No. 3.

The lawsuit alleges that Thibodaux Regional's operation of the two clinics violates in Terrebonne violates state law governing hospital districts.

The lawsuit was filed to "protect the public interest of ensuring viable and self-sustaining hospital service districts statewide and to support the healthcare of its community and the economic stability of the people and employees of Terrebonne Parish," Terrebonne General said.

“Terrebonne General is pleased that the Court agreed that Thibodaux Regional’s facilities in Terrebonne Parish were operating in violation of the Hospital Service District Law,” said Phyllis Peoples, Terrebonne General president and CEO, in a news release.

“We believe the 30-day period is reasonable for an orderly cessation of operations at those locations found to have been operating in violation of state law.”

"Thibodaux Regional Health System does not agree with the ruling and plans to appeal are underway," said a Thibodaux General press release.

"Thibodaux Regional Health System greatly appreciates the trust and support of the people we serve. We remain deeply committed to deliver high quality, personalized care, bringing services to people closer to home to improve accessibility, convenience and timeliness of care."

The urgent care clinic treats 20,000 patients each year, Thibodaux Regional said, and the multispecialty clinic sees 10,000 patients annually. The multispecialty clinic offers pulmonology, obstetrics-gynecology, neurology, neurosurgery, podiatry, internal medicine, family practice, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and pain management services.

Thibodaux Regional's press release pointed to a new role it assumed in October 2019, when it transitioned from a hospital service district into a 501(c) 3 nonprofit hospital organization. That transition was approved by the Louisiana Attorney General's Office, the hospital said.

Woman accused of failing to seek aid for overdose victim

Morgan City police have arrested a Belle Rose woman accused of failing to give timely help to an opioid overdose victim.

Christen Hebert Brown, 42, La. 308, Bell Rose, was arrested at 11:32 p.m. Monday on a charge of failure to seek assistance. Bail has been set at $100,000.

Investigators with the Morgan City Police Department Detectives Division began an investigation in January related to a potential overdose on opioids, the Police Department said.

According to reports, officers responded to Brashear Avenue regarding a subject who was overdosing on opioids. Officers arrived and located the subject, who was in dire need of medical attention and was showing signs of overdosing.

The subject was transported to a local medical facility and is still under medical care.

The investigation continued, and information was obtained that Brown allegedly failed to render aid to the subject overdosing, the Police Department said. Reports indicate that instead of calling for medical attention, Brown was looking for Narcan, which delayed medical attention that the subject needed. Warrants were prepared for Brown's arrest.

Brown was located in the area of Bayou Vista with the assistance of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office. She was booked and processed in the Morgan City Jail and is awaiting court proceedings.

The police press release said Chief Chad M. Adams and the Morgan City Police Department "want to make everyone aware of the dangers of opioid use. The Morgan City Police Department has seen an influx of overdoses related to opioid use such as heroin and fentanyl. These two drugs are very deadly.

"The Morgan City Police Department is equipped with Narcan, which has been deployed multiple times on overdose investigations. It is very important that anyone that is present of while someone is overdosing to immediately report it. It is required by Louisiana Law to do so. It my save their life."

Franklin fire blamed on electrical failure

Eight fire departments were called to battle the blaze that destroyed Joe's Lounge in Franklin on Friday.

An electrical failure in the building is believed to have started the fire.

Multiple hoses were placed in service, and Franklin crews made an aggressive interior attack on the fire, the Franklin Fire Department said.

Initial crews were met with a large volume of fire, significant heat and smoke. Conditions deteriorated rapidly, and firefighters were ordered to evacuate the structure.
The fire was under control at 7:36 p.m..

No one was in the building, and no injuries were reported. Franklin firefighters asked the State Fire Marshal to assist with the investigation.

The Franklin Fire Department was joined by firefighters from District 11, Baldwin, the Chitimacha department, Centerville, Patterson, Bayou Vista and Morgan City. The Franklin Police Department provided traffic control.

The Franklin firefighters also praised their colleagues in a Facebook post.

"Yesterday’s fire highlights the importance of relationships with neighboring fire departments and why building those relationships and training together are vital. You sawepartments from one end of the parish to the other, working together to contain and extinguish a very dangerous fire.

"This may look like a total loss or even a failure to some, but from a different perspective, adjacent structures were saved, no injuries to civilians were reported, and all first responders went home safely to their families, which is a job well done.

"hanks to all area departments that responded to our call for help without hesitation! Also, thanks to Brown’s Boiling House and Domino’s of Franklin for providing a meal to exhausted personnel."

Morgan City receives $6.9 million grant for gas infrastructure

On Thursday, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration held a press briefing to announce historic investments in Louisiana's pipeline infrastructure. The city of Morgan City was awarded a grant for $6.9 million for the city's natural gas pipelines.

The Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure Safety and Modernization grant program is aimed at mitigating safety risk in methane emissions from the highest risk, legacy natural gas distribution pipes.

Also at the briefing, officials announced that Carencro will receive $3.4 million for the same purpose.

This program, established by President Joe Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, provides nearly $200 million a year for a total of nearly $1 billion over five years for the modernization of municipality and community-owned, high-risk natural gas distribution pipes.

U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins, R-Lafayette, announced the grants.

“While I opposed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Actin its totality as a matter of principle, some of the proposals within the bill were solid. Ultimately, the bill became law, and the funding has been allocated. We continue to advocate for the advancement of Louisiana projects,” said Higgins. “This funding will provide much needed resources to improve the safety of our energy infrastructure so that our communities can continue to progress toward a safe and healthy future.”
