2,929 in St.Mary vote early for Nov. 18 runoffs

Not quite 3,000 St. Mary voters took advantage of early voting for Saturday's runoff elections, suggesting that the turnout will be low again.

The Registrar of Voters Office reported that 2,929 votes were received during the Nov. 3-11 early voting period, or 9.3% of St. Mary's 31,614 registered voters.

The Oct. 14 primary, with the governor's race at the top of the ticket, resulted in a combined St. Mary voter turnout of about 38%.

The state treasurer, secretary of state and attorney general races will be cided in runoffs Saturday, along with four constitutional amendments.

Locally:

--Robert Allain of Franklin and Henry "Bo" LaGrange of Patterson, both Republicans, are in the runoff for the open state Senate District 21 seat.

--In Parish Council District 3, incumbent Rodney Olander is being challenged by former Councilcman Peter Soprano. Both are from Franklin.

--In Parish Council District 5, incumbent Leslie "Les" Rulf is being challenged by Douglas Streety Jr. Both are from Patterson.

--In Parish Council District 8, incumbent Mark Duhon is being challenged by CarloGagliano Jr. Both are from Amelia.

The deadline to request an absentee ballot is Nov. 14 by 4:30 p.m. (other than military and overseas voters). Voters can request an absentee ballot online through the Voter Portal or in writing through the Registrar of Voters Office.

The deadline for a registrar of voters to receive a voted absentee ballot is Nov. 17 by 4:30 p.m. (other than military and overseas voters).

Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. on election day. Anyone in line at 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

Voters can find their polling location and sample ballot by downloading the GeauxVote Mobile app for smartphones, or by visiting www.GeauxVote.com and logging into the Voter Portal.

Voters can sign up for electronic notifications via GeauxVote Mobile.

Voters should bring an ID with them to vote (Louisiana driver’s license, Louisiana Special ID card, a generally recognized picture identification card with name and signature such as a passport, or a digital license via LA Wallet).

Election results can be viewed in real time via GeauxVote Mobile or at www.sos.la.gov.

Arrests on drug, drunk-driving and battery charges reported

St. Mary deputies reported arrests on drunk-driving and battery charges last week, while Morgan City police accused two of drunk driving and and two more of drug possession.
Franklin police made seven arrests for battery, assault or principal to assault.

St. Mary

Sheriff Blaise Smith reported that over the last 96-hour reporting period, the Sheriff’s Office responded to 116 complaints and made these arrests:

--Dallas Alton Howard, 38, Fordoche, was arrested at 2:08 p.m. Thursday on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless operation (no accident). Bail has not been set at this time.

--Jackson Ulises Perez Juarez, 21, Amelia, was arrested at 11:21 p.m. Thursday on charges of reckless operation (no accident), battery on a police officer, resisting a police officer with force, driver must be licensed and resisting an officer by flight.
Bail has not been set at this time.

--James P. Domangue, 73, Arlington, Texas, was arrested at 5:06 p.m. Friday on a warrant alleging failure to appear on a charge of motorcycle helmet required. Bail was set at $350.

--Tyrone David Jackson, 40, Franklin, was arrested at 7:15 p.m. Friday on a warrant alleging failure to appear on a charge of simple battery. Bail has not been set at this time.

Morgan City

Chief Chad M. Adams reported that the Morgan City Police Department responded to 132 calls for service over the last 72-hour reporting period and made these arrests:

--Shanica Shanelle Welsh, 42, Orange Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 10:26 a.m. Friday on a charge of cruelty to animals.

--Shawn Casey Lovell Sr., 46, Sixth Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 1:49 a.m. Monday on a charge of remaining after being forbidden.

--Tyrone L. Freeman, 54, La. 87. Franklin, was arrested at 12:54 p.m. Friday on charges of theft (under $1,000) and failure to appear for arraignment (6th Ward Morgan City Court) and as a fugitive from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office.

--Isaac T. Jones, 47, Roger Drive, New Orleans, was arrested at 7:49 p.m. Saturday on charge of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension, no insurance and failure to appear for arraignment (16th Judicial District Court).

--Trei Andrews, 24, Sweet William, Hammond, was arrested at 12:01 a.m. Sunday on charges of possession of hydrocodone, possession of THC and possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance

--Jesus Salvador Sanchez-Argueta, 34, Cypress Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 12:02 p.m. Sunday on charges of driving while intoxicated (first offense), no driver's license and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

--Cristian Alonso Hernande-Ulloa, 24, Victor II Boulevard, Morgan City, was arrested at 2:15 a.m. Sunday on charges of driving while intoxicated (first offense), reckless operation of a motor vehicle and possession of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.

Franklin

Chief Cedric Handy reported that the Franklin Police Department responded to 20 complaints over the weekend and made made these arrests:

--Carl Dupas, 60, Iberia Street, Franklin, was arrested at 1:41 p.m. Nov. 9 on a warrant dated Nov. 3 alleging possession of cocaine. Dupas was booked, processed and transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center.

--Alicia Sereal, 40, Adams Street, Franklin, was arrested at 9:13 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant dated Nov. 6 alleging domestic abuse battery (strangulation), and warrants for 16th Judicial District Court alleging probation violation. Sereal was booked, processed and held on a $21,240 bond.

--Jamyius Austin, 18, Norris Road, New Iberia, was arrested at 2:57 p.m. Saturday on charges of principal to aggravated battery, illegal possession of stolen firearms, contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, terrorizing and simple battery. Austin was booked, processed, and held on a $75,000 bond.

--Skyler Derise, 18, New Horizon Drive, New Iberia, was arrested at 2:57 p.m. Saturday on charges of principal to aggravated battery, illegal possession of stolen firearms, illegal carrying of weapons, contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, terrorizing and simple battery. Derise was booked, processed and held on a $75,000 bond.

--Jakylan Payton, 18, Eagle Street, Franklin, was arrested at 2:57 p.m. Saturday on charges of principal to aggravated battery, illegal possession of stolen firearms, contributing to the delinquency of juveniles and terrorizing. Payton was booked, processed and held on a $75,000 bond.

--Gajan Reed, 38, Ash Street, Franklin, was arrested at 5:56 p.m. Saturday on a warrant dated Oct 27 alleging home invasion. Reed was booked, processed and held on a $25,000 bond.

--Roman Hernandez-Perez, 21, 73rd Street, Cut Off, was arrested at 2:02 a.m. Sunday on charges of speeding and no driver's license. Hernandez-Perez was booked, processed and released on a $468.50 bond.

--Jardyn McCoy, 23, Iberia Street, Franklin, was arrested at 12:25 p.m. Sunday on warrants for 16th Judicial District Court alleging failure to appear on charges of possession with intent to distribute Schedule I narcotics, illegal use of weapons, transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses, battery of a police officer, resisting an officer, violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance law (drug-free zone), possession of drug paraphernalia and window tint. McCoy was booked, processed and transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center.

--Demontay Lightfoot Sr., 29, Willow Street, Franklin, was arrested at 8:13 p.m. Sunday on charges of domestic abuse battery (child endangerment), aggravated battery and simple assault. Lightfoot was booked, processed and held on a $75,000 bond.

--Dayton Madison, 28, Weber Street, Jeanerette, was arrested at 10:45 p.m. Sunday on a warrant dated Aug. 17 alleging simple assault, and a warrant dated Aug. 11 alleging telephone harassment. Madison was booked, processed and held on a $10,000 bond.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4222 in Morgan City hosted a Veterans Day ceremony Saturday at the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium. The special address was given by Cory Williams, a combat veteran who leads the Morgan City JROTC program, and featured information about the military performance of former Morgan City resident Jessie Voisin Jr. Morgan City High School’s JROTC played a big role in the VFW’s Veterans Day event. Members presented the colors, performed the three-volley salute, and retired the colors. .Cadet Emily Pillaro sang the National Anthem.

A mother-duo from Morgan City Junior High received Employee and Student of the Month honors Thursday from the St. Mary Parish School Board. Emily Berry, eight-grade English language arts teacher, was named Employee of the Month. Daughter Whitley Berry, an eighth-grader is the Student of the Month. Also recognized Thursday but not pictured were Berwick High senior Cherish Lewis as Student of the Month and Zachary Stewart, also of Berwick High, as Employee of the Month.

Morgan City police and St. Mary deputies reported arrests on drug-related charges this week.

St. Mary

Sheriff Blaise Smith reported that over the last 24-hour reporting period, the Sheriff’s Office responded to 30 complaints and made this arrest:

--Johnathan Jermaine Miller, 44, New Iberia, was arrested at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant alleging failure to appear on charges of possession, distribution, and sale of a legend drug without a prescription; possession of hydrocodone; possession of drug paraphernalia; and improper lane usage.

Morgan City

Chief Chad M. Adams reported that the Morgan City Police Department responded to 108 calls for service over the last 48-hour reporting period and made these arrests:

--Gilbert B. Ramagos, 30, Henry Street, Patterson, was arrested at 1:50 p.m. Thursday on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and window tint violation.
