Flag-raising at Ochsner honors organ 'donor heroes'

You have to believe Alanna Sloane, a teacher of Wyandotte Elementary second-graders and married mother of two daughters, is often on the run. And more than three years ago, running was in her plans.
Sloane was training for a marathon. But she became ill with COVID, and her recovery was slow. She didn’t have the old energy. And then her eyes took on a yellow color.
Sloane was suffering from autoimmune hepatitis, a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the liver. Her condition worsened until she was taken to a New Orleans hospital by ambulance. After spending days in an induced coma, Sloane received the liver transplant that saved her life.
She was among those who gathered Tuesday for a flag-raising at Ochsner St. Mary. Transplant recipients attended along with representatives of the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency and the Southern Eye Bank. The blue and white flag bears the words “donor heroes.”
“March 1 is like my new birthday,” Sloane told the crowd. “I got a second chance at life.”
April is National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Month. According to the Donate Life organization, 2,089 Louisiana people are on lists awaiting organs for transplant. Nationally, a patient is placed on a waiting list every 10 seconds, and 8,000 people die each year while awaiting transplants.
Sloane counts herself among the lucky ones. Sick as she was, and having been cut off from anyone except husband Joey because of COVID, she spent only three days on a transplant list.
Her life now is normal, except that she takes anti-rejection medication and can’t eat raw food.
“It’s good to be in a small town,” Sloane said. “You get the prayers and support. Everybody knows your name.”
Morgan City Councilman Lou Tamporello also counts himself fortunate. He lost a kidney to cancer in 2000, and years later developed liver disease.
Thirteen years ago, Tamporello was placed on lists to await liver and kidney transplants. He spent waiting only three days before the procedure was performed at Ochsner in New Orleans.
“Some people wait years,” Tamporello said.
He thanked his doctors and his chief caregiver, his wife Mary.
The wait was longer for another Morgan City resident, Charlie Solar Sr. He suffered from liver disease and spent a year on a transplant list, although he didn’t know he was on the list for much of that time.
Then, on Nov. 4, 2022, the call came.
Solar had sat down with a bowl of oatmeal.
“They called and said I had to be there,” Solar said. “I said, ‘I just got my food. Could I get just a bite?’
“She said, no, no, no, you’ve got to get here.”
His liver transplant was performed at Ochsner in New Orleans.
Neither Soane, Tamporello nor Solar knows anything about the people whose organ donations saved their lives. They may be unknown, but they’re not forgotten.
“That’s bothered him more than anything else,” Solar’s wife Helen said. “That somebody died to give their organs.”
To become an organ donor, you can express your yes-or-no wishes on the back of your Louisiana driver’s license. You can also join a donor registry maintained by Donate Life America at donatelife.net.
Joyce Fragola of the Southern Eye Bank in Metairie said it’s important for donors to tell family members about their intention to donate.

Lawmakers push bills to protect La. seafood industry

BATON ROUGE--Louisiana lawmakers are considering a batch of bills to safeguard the state's seafood industry from an influx of foreign shrimp and crawfish and to strengthen safety measures for imported products.

Some bills would increase fees and licensing requirements on dealers bringing in foreign seafood and expand safety testing. Others would require more accurate labeling about where any type of seafood originates and ban the use of foreign seafood in school lunch programs.

The action comes as imports now make up nearly 90% of America’s seafood supply, and Louisiana crawfish farmers face a disastrous season due to last summer’s drought and a freeze over the winter.

House Bill 748, which would update Louisiana’s fee system for imported seafood, is just a piece of the new seafood legislation. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Jessica Domangue, R-Houma and the daughter of a commercial fisherman, would raise the state’s $100-a-year fee on companies that process and distribute imported seafood to 0.1% of the company’s gross revenue.

“Our seafood industry has seen unprecedented challenges in recent years,” Domangue said. “Our seafood industry, in particular, has been decimated by the influx of imported farm-raised product.”

Domangue’s bill passed unanimously through a House committee and is scheduled to be discussed Tuesday on the floor of the House.

The House already has passed a similar measure, House Bill 676, by Rep. Timothy P. Kerner, R-Lafitte. It would create a new license for importers and charge annual fees ranging from $500 to $100,000 based on the volume of imported seafood.

The additional money would be used to increase inspection and testing of foreign seafood, which can contain harmful contaminants.

Other bills have been advancing in the Senate.

Senate Bill No. 166, also spurred by concerns over food safety and possibly fraudulent marketing practices, aims to increase transparency and protect Louisiana’s historic culinary heritage.

It would outlaw misleading descriptions of seafood as “Louisiana-style” or “New Orleans-style” unless all processing is completed locally or within the Gulf region.

The bill’s author, Patrick Connick, R-Marrero, said labels selling foreign shrimp as if it were from Louisiana are “potentially misleading. The law that we are trying to pass is to make the country-of-origin name bigger.”

His bill also would add to the requirements on restaurants to notify customers when they serve imported seafood. It would require the Louisiana Department of Health to set up a way for consumers to file complaints.

Other bills moving forward include Senate Bill 40, by Sen. Robert Allain, R-Franklin, which would expand the work of the Seafood Safety Task Force at the Health Department.

Senate Bill 62, by Sen. Mike Fesi, R-Houma, would increase testing and labeling requirements on seafood processors and require the Health Department to impose fines for violations.

And on Wednesday, the House Education Committee voted 10-0 to advance House Bill 49, by Rep. Marcus Bryant, D-New Iberia. It would ban imported seafood in lunches served at public schools and private schools receiving state funds.

Opening Day in Morgan City

Saturday was Opening Day for three Morgan City youth baseball leagues at Complex Field near Morgan City Municipal Auditorium.

About 150 players 7-12 have signed up to play in the Minor League, City League and Dixie League this year, up from 2023. They're playing on a newly renovated field that, for the time being, will have a slightly elevated home plate area until after the season, when top soil will be used to build up the infield. New turf has been planted on the infield and in the outfield.

The teams are Scully's Aluminum Boats, Central Appraisal, G&J Land and Marine, Taco Bell and Peterdon's Golf Carts in the Minor League; Halimar, Cleveland Billiot, Hanko's, Guidry and Horaist Orthodontics, and Wildflower Boutique in the City League; and Dragna Brothers, Johnny's Propeller, and Skipper's Sporting Goods in the Dixie League.

Opening Day for T-ball, wee-ball and softball will be in two weeks.
