VIOLET LEBLANC BELANGER

January 15, 1938 – March 27, 2017
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 31, 2017, at Ibert’s Mortuary in Franklin during a 7 p.m. memorial service for Violet LeBlanc Belanger, a native and lifelong resident of Franklin who passed away at her home on Monday, March 27, 2017, at the age of 79 with her family by her side. Father Peter Emusa will conduct the memorial. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday at Ibert’s from 5 p.m. until service time.
Those she leaves to cherish her memory include her three children, Wilbur Alleman and his wife Lea, Ricky Alleman and his companion Deirdre “DeeDee” Satathite, and Denise Belanger and her companion Ves Mashburn; two sisters, Patsy LaGrange Phillips and her husband Gary and Penny LaGrange Falgout; four grandchildren, Chris Alleman, Kerry Alleman, Kasey Alleman, and Heidi Belanger LeBourgeois; and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence P. LeBlanc; her mother, Odell Ewing LaGrange; her step-father, Eugene “Cajun” LaGrange; one brother, Michael LaGrange; one sister, Diane LaGrange Broussard; and one grandson, Korey Paul Alleman.

Back where they belong

Franklin Public Works crews replaced a lamp post that was destroyed in an auto accident back in January. Total Electric Service of Franklin was on hand to repair the wiring that was also damaged, leading from one post to the next post on the boulevard across the street to the east.

PHI closing? Leaders urged to action

Petroleum Helicopters Inc. isn’t confirming or denying that it plans to close its Amelia facility this summer. MCHS Lady Tigers qualify for semifinals after 2-0 finish at Bi-Regionals

The Morgan City High School Lady Tiger bowling team collected two more wins this season and advanced to their second straight Final Four following an undefeated performance in the state’s Western Bi-Regionals at Creole Lanes Monday.
Morgan City (15-0) and the top seed in the Western Bi-Regional, knocked off No. 9 H.L. Bourgeois, 16-11, before defeating No. 5 Ellender, 18-9, to qualify for the state semifinals.
Morgan City now will play a team to be determined from the state’s Eastern Bi-Regional. That competition is taking place today.
In Monday’s finale against Ellender, the teams were tied at 4 after a game, while Morgan City took a 9-7 lead after two games en route to the win.
Meghan Amador led Morgan City with a 542 series (172, 188, 182), while Mackenzie Amador had a 518 series (200, 169) and Hannah Pipes, a 515 series (205, 165). Other high games for Morgan City included Kyleigh Campbell (162) and Marissa Davis (155).
Against H.L. Bourgeois, Morgan City staved off an upset bid.
The Lady Tigers fell behind 7-1 after game one but took game two, 6-2, to cut its deficit to 9-7 after two games.
In game three, Morgan City won took four of the six games and the additional two points for winning total pins in the game.
The Lady Tigers got the additional three points for total pins in the match for the 16-11 final.
Pipes led Morgan City with a 569 series (165, 171, 233), while Meghan Amador added a 564 series (167, 224, 173). Other top games by Morgan City bowlers included Ali Tregle (161, 153) and Mackenzie Amador (151).

Bi-Regional finals
The Morgan City Tigers made a run in Monday’s Bi-Regionals but came up one game short of advancing to the state semifinals as it fell to No. 5 H.L. Bourgeois, 24-3, in the finals.
Morgan City, the No. 9 seed, started the day with an upset of No. 8 Holy Savior Menard, 25-2, before knocking off top seed Parkway, 16.5-10.5, to advance to face H.L. Bourgeois.
Against H.L. Bourgeois, Jayson Hidalgo led Morgan City with a 573 series (223, 203), while Hau Vo added a 511 series (169, 184). Other top games for Morgan City bowlers included Zach Aucoin (205, 243), Zachary Stewart (167), Jonathan Spinella (165) and Trevor Tong (162).
Against Parkway, Morgan City took a 5-3 lead after game one and an 11-5 lead after two games en route to the victory.
Stewart led Morgan City with a 564 series (186, 179, 199), while Spinella bowled a 554 series (170, 179, 205). Jayson Hidalgo added a 549 series (201, 199), Devin Hidalgo, a 538 series (205, 163, 170) and Vo, a 537 series (170, 204, 163).
Against Menard, top games for Morgan City included Spinella (168, 225), Aucoin (207, 175), Stewart (168, 181), Jayson Hidalgo (220), Devin Hidalgo (205), Jason Myers (202), Antoine Bui (173), Vo (162) and Devin Mayon (160).

Two arrested after vehicle flees deputy

Two Gray men were arrested Monday after a vehicle fled from a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, and the driver then fled on foot before being captured, Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release. The driver had numerous charges while a passenger was booked on a gun charge.
—Kelvin Vincent, 33, of Bon Jovi Boulevard in Gray, was arrested at 7:09 p.m. Monday on charges of failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, improper lane usage, flight from an officer, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, obstruction of justice, transactions involving drug proceeds, violation of a uniform controlled dangerous substance law-drug free zone/church, possession of drug paraphernalia and aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce.
—Mardanion Vincent, 27, of Bon Jovi Boulevard in Gray, was arrested at 7:09 p.m. Monday on a charge of illegal carrying of weapons.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit observed an SUV fail to move over for a Morgan City Police Unit who was assisting a vehicle on the elevated portion of U.S. 90. The K-9 unit detective initiated a traffic stop. The driver of the SUV exited onto Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and drove into a parking lot.
The driver failed to come to a stop and pulled onto Allison Street and Justa Street before driving into the recreational area beneath the overpass where several juveniles were playing basketball. The driver got out of the vehicle and fled leaving the SUV in drive.
The SUV continued to roll forward. A narcotics detective pursued the driver on foot while the K-9 unit detective stopped the moving vehicle and detained the passenger who was identified as Mardanion Vincent. During a search of his person, a handgun was found concealed in his pants.
As the foot chase unfolded, detectives saw the suspect throw methamphetamine to the ground. The detective apprehended the fleeing suspect near Roderick Street and later identified him as Kelvin Vincent. Detectives recovered the methamphetamine Kelvin Vincent discarded and located over $350 in cash on him.
Detectives also found marijuana and a digital scale inside the vehicle. Continuing the investigation, detectives found evidence that Kelvin Vincent sold methamphetamine. Kelvin Vincent and Mardanion Vincent, who are cousins, were jailed with no bail set.
Hebert reported responding to 36 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrest relating to east St. Mary Parish:
—Adrienne Paul, 24, of Beau Lane in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 11:43 p.m. Monday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of possession of marijuana and on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of smoking in a vehicle prohibited. During the booking process at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, a correctional officer located the active warrants for Paul’s arrest. Bail is set at $1,250.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Jerieth J. Callery, 29, of Pecos Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:22 p.m. Monday on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of synthetic marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine, violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance law-drug free zone, illegal use of controlled dangerous substance in presence of juveniles, illegal carrying of weapons in presence of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
—Letitia Pailette, 41, of Pecos Street in Morgan City, arrested at 10:22 p.m. Monday on charges of possession of cocaine, illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in presence of juveniles and violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance law-drug free zone.
The Morgan City Police Department began an investigation a few weeks ago regarding sales of illegal narcotics at a Pecos Street home. Narcotics division investigators conducted a search warrant on the home. Callery, Pailette and a juvenile were inside.
Police used the K-9 division in the search of the home and located a large amount of suspected marijuana and synthetic marijuana that was packaged in a manner consistent with the illicit sales of illegal narcotics. Investigators also found scales and packaging material to allegedly facilitate such sales.
Investigators also located suspected cocaine and a 12-gauge shotgun. During the investigation, police found evidence linking Callery to the suspected marijuana and synthetic marijuana. The area where the incident took place was in a drug-free zone. Callery and Pailette were jailed.
—Kandise N. Chavis, 31, of Glenwood Street in Morgan City, arrested at 6:21 p.m. Friday on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of Alprazolam and violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance law-drug free zone.
Morgan City police’s criminal investigations division was assisting Patterson Police Department with an investigation on an incident that led investigators to a Glenwood Street home in Morgan City.
Upon arrival, police located Chavis, Devin Andrews and Tamario Ulmer at the home. Investigators found evidence that led to a search warrant being conducted on the home. Police located and seized a large amount of suspected methamphetamine, crack cocaine and marijuana along with multiple items of drug paraphernalia.
Investigators also found several firearms and Alprazolam. A large amount of narcotics along with a firearm and paraphernalia were located in a room belonging to Andrews. Suspected marijuana was located in areas belonging to Ulmer and Chavis along with Alprazolam linked to Chavis.
The home was located in a drug-free zone. Chavis was arrested and transported to the Morgan City jail. Andrews and Ulmer were transported to Patterson Police Department where they were arrested and incarcerated due to the initial investigation conducted by Patterson Police. Arrest warrants have been prepared for Andrews’ and Ulmer’s arrests pending release from Patterson Police custody.
—Glynn A. Guidry Jr., 36, of Carline Street in Morgan City, arrested at 5:40 p.m. Monday on warrants charging him with probation violation, failure to pay probation fee and failure to pay a fine. Guidry was located by the Berwick Police Department and arrested on city court warrants. Guidry was jailed.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.

Morgan City shuts out South Terrebonne, 7-0

Morgan City scored all of its runs in two innings and held South Terrebonne scoreless and to just two hits in 7-0 victory in a key District 7-4A contest in Morgan City Monday. Morgan City took a 2-0 lead in the second and extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Tigers outhit South Terrebonne, 8-2, in a battle of top five Class 4A teams, according to the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings. MCHS rallies to defeat South Lafourche, 11-6

Morgan City rallied with five runs in the fifth inning for an eventual 11-6 win against South Lafourche in District 7-4A action in Morgan City Monday. Morgan City made its move in the fifth inning with the game tied at six. Earlier on, South Lafourche took a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning. However, Morgan City responded with one run in the bottom of the second and five more in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Learning about La. wetlands

In conjunction with a program on Louisiana wetlands offered through the LSU AgCenter, Holy Cross Elementary School students learn about conservation and our state’s natural resources. Pre-K3 students learned about the different fish and wildlife that were utilized by our Cajun ancestors and observed an American bullfrog caught by Teacher’s Assistant Shanna Hepler. Pictured are Helper, holding Coconut the bullfrog, with students Rose Autrey, Emma Reasoner, Ava Clements, Layla Naquin, Kace Comeaux and Thomas Theriot. Coconut was later released into the wild.

Tigers drop pair of district games

The Hanson Memorial Tigers dropped a pair of District 7-1A games to Ascension Episcopal School on Thursday and the Vermilion Catholic Eagles on Friday to slip to 1-2 in league play.
Hanson, which will play host to Vermilion Catholic tonight at 6 at the Amar Lancon Field, came up on the short end of a 5-0 loss to the VCHS Eagles on Friday in Abbeville.

Harrison Vicknair fired a 3-hitter, lifting the Vermilion Catholic Eagles to a 5-0 win over the Hanson Memorial Tigers here Friday at the VCHS Baseball Field.
Vicknair worked seven complete innings, allowing no runs on three hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
Peyton Trahan and Brian Sonnier saw mound duties for the Tigers. Trahan started and worked four innings, giving up five runs (2 earned) on five hits with four walks. Sonnier hurled the final two frames, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Leading hitters for Hanson were: Luke Lancon, 1 for 2, double; Peyton Trahan, 1 for 3 and Noah Judice, 1 for 3.
Matt Fontennot led VC with a 2 for 3 performance with two runs and 1 RBI.
AES 11, Hanson 4
On Thursday, the Ascension Episcopal School Blue Gators notched an 11-4 District 7-1A win over the Hanson Tigers.
AES suffered a 5-4 loss to the Hanson Tigers in eight innings on Tuesday in Franklin.
AES responded by earning an 11-4 win over Hanson on Thursday.
Leading hitters for Hanson were: Luke Lancon, 1 for 3, 2 runs; Peyton Trahan, 1 for 3, run, RBI; Chase Mensman, 2 for 2; RBI; Jack Vaccarella, 1 for 3; Luke Rodriguez, 1 for 2 and Brock Broussard, 1 for 3, run.
Skylar Fitch started on the hill for the Tigers, pitching 3.33 innings, allowing six runs (2 earned) on four hits with five walks.
Brock Broussard went the final 2.67 frames, giving up five runs (2 earned) on five hits with four walks.

Lady Eagles slip past Lady Tigers

ABBEVILLE _ Vermilion Catholic’s Lady Eagles slipped past the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers 9-7 emotionally-charged eight-inning thriller here Monday in District 7-1A action on a walk-off two-run homer.
Hanson Memorial (8-8, 7-2) rallied for five runs in the seventh frame, sending the game into an extra inning knotted at 7-all.
In the eighth frame, Vermilion Catholic’s A. Mallet lined a two-run homer to give the Lady Eagles an amazing 9-7 comeback victory.
The Lady Tigers _ currently ranked No. 7 in the Division IV poll _ extended their current streak of double-digits hits with 14 while scoring seven runs on and two errors. Vermilion Catholic collected nine runs on nine hits with five errors.
Hanson gave current No. 1 Vermilion Catholic all it could handle in the heart-pounding District 7-1A battle Monday in Abbeville.
Leading hitters for the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers were: Casey Fitzgerald, 2 for 5, 2 singles, RBI; Allyssa Young, 1 for 4, solo homer, run, 2 RBI; Lunden Verdin, 1 for 5, triple; Kaylee Broussard, 3 for 5, 2 doubles, single, run; Noel Baker, 1 for 4, run; Baylee Young, 2 for 5, double, 2 RBI; Megan LeBlanc, 1 for 4, run and Camille Baker, 3 for 4, 3 singles, run, RBI.
Lady Tiger Baylee Young took the loss in the circle after relieving Hanson starter Ashlee Meyerholtz, who worked 5 1/3 frames, allowing seven runs (2 earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and 3 walks. Baylee Young pitched two-innings, surrendering run runs on two hits with 3 walks and one strikeout.
Vermilion Catholic blew open a close game with five runs in the sixth frame, taking an 8-2 advantage.
Hanson’s Lady Tigers answered with a 5-run eruption of their own to send the game into extra innings, tied at 7-7
Lady Tigers Kaylee Broussard kept her red-hot hitting streak going with a double before Noel Baker reached by error and Baylee Young singled to load the bases in the second inning.
VCHS quickly brought the infield up, stopping both Broussard and Noel Baker from scoring keeping the Lady Tigers scoreless until Baylee Young tagged home plate on Camille Baker’s two-out single.
Hanson’s Allyssa Young continued on her torrid hitting streak with a solo homer in the fourth frame, helping the Lady Tigers trim the Lady Eagles lead.
In the sixth frame, Vermilion Catholic struck for five runs, building a 7-2 advantage heading into the final at-bat.
Hanson’s Lady Tigers manufactured five run in dramatic style, forcing an extra inning with the game knotted at 7-7.
Hanson’s five-run uprising started when Kaylee Broussard lined a one-out single. Noel Baker followed with a single, putting runners in scoring position. Baylee Young ripped a 2-run double, plating both Broussard and Baker as the Lady Tigers cut the Lady Eagles’ lead to 7-4. Baylee Young advanced to third base on Ashlee Meyerholtz’s grounder to second base. LeBlanc, who reached first base by error, scored Baylee Young as Hanson drew closer to VC at 7-5. Hanson’s Casey Fitzgerald tied the game at 7-all when she slammed a two-run single which plated LeBlanc and Camille Baker, who reached on a single.
VC’s Mallet handed the Lady Eagles their second straight win over the Hanson Lady Tigers with a two-run walk-off homer in the eighth inning as Vermilion Catholic earned the 9-7 District 7-1A win.
Hanson (8-8, 7-2) will play host to the Centerville Lady Bulldogs on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in District 7-1A action.
