Patterson rolls into Babe Ruth 12U semifinals

The Patterson 12U All-Stars bounced back from its first loss in Babe Ruth play this year with two dominant victories Thursday to advance to Friday’s 12U World Series semifinals.
Patterson, the No. 5 seed, started the day with a 12-1 victory against Missouri-based Boonville All-Stars, the No. 4 seed, before capping the day with a 14-0 victory against Virginia-based Rockville All-Stars, the No. 8 seed in four innings in the afternoon.
Patterson advances to the semifinals where it will face Kentucky-based Jeffersontown All-Stars at noon Friday. Patterson beat Jeffersontown 6-1 in pool play, and ironically, the two teams met in the semifinals a year ago, with Patterson winning en route to an eventual World Series title.
The winner of the Patterson-Jeffersontown contest will advance to Saturday’s title game, which is set for 3 p.m. The loser must navigate its way through the elimination bracket and win four games in approximately 24 hours to win the title.
Jeffersontown, along with Patterson, was one of five teams to upset higher seeds on the first day of bracket play. Jeffersontown, the No. 7 seed, defeated North Carolina-based Wilmington, the No. 2 seed, 10-3 before topping New Jersey-based Mount Olive 14-0.
Rockville had the biggest upset of the day as the squad defeated Indiana-based East Side All-Stars, the top seed, 4-3. East Side entered bracket play undefeated and had surrendered zero runs.
In the Patterson-Rockville contest, Patterson scored three runs in the first before breaking the game open with nine runs in the second. The local squad added two runs in the third. The game was called in the fourth due to the mercy rule.
Patterson outhit Rockville 12-2, and Rockville committed four errors to Patterson’s one miscue.
Laila Dugar and Emily Lipari combined for a two-hitter on the mound. Dugar earned the win as she surrendered one hit, walked two and fanned two in three innings. Lipari pitched an inning and surrendered a hit and fanned one.
Offensively, Ella Hover led Patterson with a 3-for-3 performance with two doubles, a triple, six RBIs and two runs. Other top Patterson offensive contributors were Amaya Williams, 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs; Emily Lipari, 2-for-3, two runs; Charlotte Callais, 1-for-2, an RBI, a stolen base and a run; Laila Dugar, 1-for-3, an RBI; Bryleigh Dehart, 1-for-2; Kamille Lightfoot, 1-for-3, a run; and Hannah Domingue, three RBIs and a run.
Brookelynne Winterson finished 2-for-2 to lead Rockville’s offense.
Madeline Winder suffered the loss. In three innings, she surrendered 14 runs (five earned) on 12 hits.
Against Boonville, Patterson erupted for seven first-inning runs for a 7-0 lead.
Boonville cut its deficit to 7-1 in the bottom of the second, and the score remained the same until Patterson added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Patterson had just five hits, but Boonville had five errors. Boonville pitchers combined for 10 walks and one hit batter.
Ryleigh Chaisson tossed a complete-game one-hitter for the win. In six innings, she surrendered one earned run on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts.
Hover led Patterson’s offense with a 2-for-4 performance with a double, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs. Other top Patterson offensive contributors were Dugar, 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run; Domingue, 1-for-3, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs; Maddi St. Blanc, 1-for-1, an RBI; and Layla Richoux, an RBI.
Marci Lammers led Boonville’s offense with a 1-for-2 performance, while Addison Newell added an RBI.
Preslee Sunderland suffered the loss. In four innings, she surrendered six runs (one earned) on two hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Man booked on negligent injuring, hit-and-run warrants

A 35-year-old Texas man was booked in Morgan City on Lafayette Parish warrants charging him with negligent injuring and hit-and-run, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.

—Scott R. Barr, 35, of Bay City, Texas, was arrested at 9:25 a.m. Thursday on charges of criminal sanctions for operating motor vehicle, proper equipment required on vehicles and Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office warrants charging him with two counts of negligent injuring and hit-and-run.

A patrol officer in the area of Federal Avenue observed a vehicle without a license plate. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver identified as Barr. A computer check revealed the vehicle was not insured, Blair said.

Barr also had active arrest warrants for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office. Barr was jailed.

Blair reported that officers responded to 51 calls and reported the following arrests:

— Teligia M. Busby, 52, of Marshall Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:03 p.m. Thursday on a charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated.

Officers responded to the area of Marshall Street in regard to an individual who was possibly intoxicated and was walking in the roadway. Officers arrived and located the individual identified as Busby, who appeared intoxicated, Blair said. Busby was jailed.

—Clara M. Drexler, 36, of Franklin Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. Friday on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and owner secure vehicle registration.

An officer in the area of Sixth and Marguerite streets observed a vehicle with a temporary license plate that was expired. A traffic stop was conducted and the drive identified as Drexler. The officer could smell an odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.

Drexler gave the officer consent to search the vehicle, and the officer located suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Drexler was jailed.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum reported that deputies responded to 34 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests:

—A juvenile male, 15, of Patterson, was arrested at 12:18 a.m. Friday on a charge of curfew violation.

—A juvenile male, 13, of Franklin, was arrested at 1:45 a.m. Friday on a charge of curfew violation.

—A juvenile male, 14, of Patterson, was arrested at 1:45 a.m. Friday on charges of curfew violation, resisting arrest, and criminal trespassing.

Deputies patrolling Bayou Vista was dispatched to the area of Venus Street and La. 182 for a suspicious persons complaint. Deputies were told that juveniles were riding bicycles around the area, possibly burglarizing vehicles. While searching the area, deputies located two juveniles on Venus Street.

Both juveniles were seen riding bicycles without reflecting lights, Anslum said. Deputies observed a third juvenile on Jupiter Street. Upon attempting to make contact with the juvenile, he fled on foot, running through several residential yards, the sheriff said.

Deputies ultimately made contact with the juvenile male at his home. All three juveniles were placed under arrest and released into the custody of their guardians, pending juvenile court proceedings.

—Timothy Troung, 23, of Village Lane in Amelia, was arrested at 10:03 p.m. Thursday on charges of three counts of simple battery. Deputies patrolling Amelia were dispatched to a medical facility for a battery complaint. Through the investigation, deputies found evidence that Troung struck his children, leaving bruises, Anslum said. Troung was released on a summons to appear in court Nov. 13.

—Brandi Thibodeaux, 31, of Bourque Street in Lafayette, was arrested, at 1:57 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of possession of synthetic cannabinoids. Thibodeaux was transported from the Lafayette Parish Jail to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. Thibodeaux was released on $2,500 bail.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:

—Bronson Benoit, 34, of East 9th Street in Thibodaux, was arrested at 10:17 p.m. Thursday on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension.

Franklin Police Chief Tina Thibodeaux reported the following arrest relating to east St. Mary Parish:

—Vivian Francis, 28, of Third Street in Franklin, was arrested at 11:40 p.m. Thursday on a Morgan City Police Department warrant charging her with hit-and-run and a Morgan City Court warrant for failure to appear on charges of general speed law and driving under suspension. Francis was jailed and then released on $1,259 bail.

Patterson Police Chief Janis Merritt reported no arrests.

After fire, Patterson Family Dollar reopens

PATTERSON — Last November marked five years in business for the Family Dollar store on Catherine Street. But the store was open for only a couple of months more. A fire, which authorities said was started the night of Jan. 1 by a 12-year-old boy for no reason they could determine, closed the store for the next eight months while repairs were underway. The store that now employs five people again was out of action, and neighbors hit hard by a local economic downturn lost a place to buy groceries and inexpensive household items. Andre’ Calloway, 30, a native of Terrebonne Parish and resident of Houma, died Thursday, July 26, 2018.

Robert Favors, 55, a native and resident of Patterson, died Thursday, July 26, 2018, at Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria.

He is survived by his father, Samuel Cross of Patterson; two sisters, Yvonne Williams and Missy Cross, both of Patterson; brothers, Rickey Favors, Wayne Favors, Jerry Favors, Ray Favors, Sammy Cross and Jerry Cross, all of Patterson, Alfred Favors of Alexandria and Terry Singleton of Franklin; and a host of other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his mother, two brothers, and maternal and paternal grandparents.

He is survived by four sons, James Lyons III, Eric Lyons, Andre Lyons and Cordell Lyons, all of Houma; three daughters, Katherine Sims of Franklin, Carla Joseph of Morgan City and Lucretia Carter of Houma; a brother, Gerald Lyons of Houma; and a host of other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, his parents, a brother and a sister.

Virgil Allen Sr., 57, a resident of Franklin, died Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Franklin Foundation Hospital.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Spirit of Liberty Church in Franklin.
He is survived by three sons, Virgin Allen Jr. and Vann Gaut, both of Hesperia, California and Kristopher Allen of California City, California; three daughters, Virchelle Allen, Rachelle Allen and Michelle Allen, all of Hesperia, California; two brothers, Larry West of California and James Allen of Franklin; four sisters, Patricia Clark of Houston, Robin Young of Morgan City, and Margie White and Monique Smith, both of Franklin; seven grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
