Patterson falls in pool play

The Patterson 8U All-Stars dropped their first pool play game at the Cal Ripken Invitational World Series Tuesday, falling to West Raleigh All-Stars 16-0 in five innings in Jensen Beach, Florida.
West Raleigh scored three runs in the first, seven in the third and six more in the fourth.
Patterson continued pool play Wednesday with two games. The local squad faced Fern Creek All-Stars at 9:30 a.m. and Fort Caroline Venom at 12:30 p.m.
Pool play will conclude Thursday, and bracket play will begin Friday. Champions in the World Series and Ironman Brackets will be crowned Sunday.
Franklin falls at Dixie Youth World Series
The Franklin 12-year-old All-Stars, also known as Team Louisiana, fell to the elimination bracket at the Dixie Youth Majors World Series in Lumberton, North Carolina, Tuesday, as it fell to South Carolina 3-1.
South Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the third and added a run in the fourth.
Ethan Judice scored Louisiana’s run in the fifth.
Judice finished the contest 2-for-2 with a double and a run.
The Louisiana-South Carolina contest pitted the two remaining undefeated teams in the tournament against one another. South Carolina advances to face North Carolina, who defeated Virginia 3-0 in elimination play Tuesday.
Louisiana will meet Florida, which survived in the elimination bracket after topping Georgia 10-1 Tuesday. The Louisiana-Florida elimination game will be played at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Tournament play will continue through Thursday when a Majors World Series Champion will be crowned.
Louisiana began the tournament with a 4-0 victory against Virginia Saturday before topping Florida 1-0 Sunday.

Patterson wins awards, ponders opioid suit

PATTERSON — The city council meeting Tuesday was all about the water — except when attention turned to one of the nation’s most serious drug problems. The council has received major recognition for the $6 million water plant now nearing completion, and it passed a law designed to keep drivers off flooded streets. The council will take a month to consider whether to join other governments in legal action against the pharmaceutical industry, an attempt to recoup the cost related to the nationwide opioid epidemic. MARGARET NASH SCHOVE

Margaret Nash Schove, 81, a native of Houma, formerly of Morgan City, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North MS in Oxford, Mississippi.
Visitation will be Sunday, 5-7 p.m., in West Hall at Waller Funeral Home and will continue Monday, 10-11 a.m., at Oxford-University United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Phillips and Janet Schove, both of Oxford; two sons, Clinton Schove and John Schove, both of Oxford; a sister, Kathryn Thomas of Charles Town, West Virginia; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Governale honored by La. Reading Association

Veronica Governale, kindergarten teacher at Julia B. Maitland School in Morgan City, recently received an award as the Louisiana Reading Association Teacher of the Year.
Governale is the immediate past-president of the Nicholls Reading Council.
Here is the letter submitted to the association to nominate Governale:
“Veronica Governale is an excellent teacher with over 20 years of experience. She encourages her Kindergarten children to become good readers and writers. Due to her outstanding classroom efforts, she has been Julia B. Maitland Elementary Teacher of the Year and a St. Mary Parish Teacher of the Year.
“Additionally, Veronica impacts the lives of children in other ways. She helps other students by tutoring fourth-graders in an after-school tutoring program. Also, she is a member of the school’s PBIS (Positive Behavior, Intervention & Support) Team.
“Veronica impacts adults in her school as well. She has served as a Supervising Teacher for student teachers and a TAP Mentor teacher.
“Aside from her teaching skills, Veronica is the backbone of her Reading Council. She has been President of Nicholls Reading Council for four years at different time periods. She served as Treasurer and Membership Chair for three years, and Young Authors Chair for 3 years.
“Her community involvement is impressive. She has been a Grant Awardee for Target and Walmart Awards & secured Council financial help with these endeavors. She partnered with MC Bank, Morgan City Rotary Club, Clarion Hotel, and Rouses Supermarkets on literacy projects. Veronica is also a member of Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Ed. Sorority, and has served as the chairperson of their World Fellowship Committee. She has served as Financial Secretary for Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Massabielle #1134, and is currently regent.
“As an ILA member, she worked with her District VI to help at the ILA Convention in New Orleans. She also assisted with the 2012 LRA State Conference as a member of the Committee to implement the event.
“It is an honor to nominate this exemplary teacher and educator for the Louisiana Reading Association Teacher of the Year Award.”

Berwick High student goes to leadership event

Berwick High student Luke Orlando was chosen to represent Louisiana HOBY at the 2018 HOBY World Leadership Congress held July 21-28 at Loyola University in Chicago.
The World Leadership Congress brought together nearly 450 young leaders from the United States and 15 other countries. Founder Hugh O’Brian referred to the World Leadership Congress as HOBY’s “Super Bowl of leadership.”

Higgins: Seafood bill would help La. fishermen

Arrest Reports 8-8-18

Chitimacha Police Chief Hal Hutchinson reported the following arrests:
Peggy Milliman, 36, of Rue Degravelle, New Iberia, was arrested July 30, on charges of theft and principal to identity theft, and was released on a summons.
On June 2, an officer responded to a tribal business in reference to a reported theft. During the investigation, it was learned that Milliman was allegedly involved but had already left the premises. A warrant was issued for Milliman. Milliman was arrested by Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office and was turned over to the Chitimacha Police Department without incident.
Nailah Williams, 26, of Bay Rum Road, Lafayette, was arrested Friday on the charge of possession of marijuana, and a fugitive warrant for the City Court of Lafayette for the charge of aggravated assault.
She was transported to the parish jail.
An officer responded to a tribal business in reference to a suspicious person. During the investigation, it was learned that Williams was in possession of illegal narcotics and had an active warrant. She was arrested.
Megan Roland, 25, of La. 1179, Plaucheville, La., was arrested Sunday on the charge of theft of goods, and was released on a summons.
On May 24, an officer responded to a tribal business in reference to a reported theft. During the investigation, it was learned that Roland allegedly committed the theft but had already left the premises. A warrant was issued for Roland. Roland was arrested by the Tunica Biloxi Police Department on the warrant and was turned over to the Chitimacha Police Department without incident.
Tyler McCain, 23, of La. 182, Marksville, La., was arrested Sunday on the charge of theft of goods, and was released on a summons.
On May 24, an officer responded to a tribal business in reference to a reported theft. During the investigation, it was learned that McCain allegedly committed the theft, but had already left the premises. A warrant was issued for McCain. McCain was arrested by the Tunica Biloxi Police Department on the warrant and was turned over to the Chitimacha Police Department without incident.
Ieisha Griffin, 26, of Robertson Street, Franklin, was arrested Tuesday on a fugitive bench warrant for the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office for failure to appear for traffic arraignment for the charge of direct contempt and failure to honor written promise to appear.
She was transported to the parish jail.
An officer observed a traffic violation and performed a traffic stop on Griffin’s vehicle. During the stop, it was learned that Griffin had an active warrant, and she was arrested.
Franklin Police Chief Tina Thibodeaux reported the following arrests:
Margaret Ritter, 18, of Main Street, Franklin, was arrested Tuesday at 11:40 a.m. on charges of no turn signal and monetary instrument abuse. Ritter was booked, processed, and released on a $2,500 bond.
Jermaine Williams, 19, of Scottie Street, Franklin, was arrested Tuesday at 1:52 p.m. on a warrant for the charge of disturbing the peace by fighting.
Williams was booked, processed, and released on a $1,000 bond.
Bobby Jackson, 30, of Welch Street, Franklin, was arrested Tuesday at 7:31 p.m. on charges of simple criminal damage to property and criminal trespassing.
Jackson was booked, processed, and released on a $1,500 bond.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum reported the following arrests:
Christopher Woods, 26, of 103 11th St., Morgan City, was arrested Tuesday at 11:36 a.m. on two warrants for failure to appear on charges of possession of cocaine, possession of alprazolam and possession of firearm by a convicted felon.
While being booked on other charges, a booking deputy located active warrants for Woods. Woods was booked on said warrants and bail was set at $18,000.
Michael Smith, 54, of 100 Oleander St., Patterson, was arrested Tuesday at 1:01 p.m. on charges of resisting arrest, disturbing the peace and interfering with a law enforcement investigation.
Deputies patrolling the area of Patterson were dispatched to an address on Oleander Street for an ungovernable juvenile. Deputies encountered Smith who became irate and began to interfere with the investigation. Upon being placed under arrest, Smith attempted to pull away from deputies. Smith was transported to the St. Mary Law Enforcement Center for booking and was released on a $1,250 bond.
Justin Sons, 28, of 3379 La. 1, Raceland, La. was arrested Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. on two warrants of failure to appear on charges of two counts of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, abuse of toxic vapors, illegal use, consumption, possession, or distribution of controlled dangerous substance in the presence of persons under 17, improper turn or failure to give signal and operating a vehicle without a driver’s license.
While being booked on other charges, a booking deputy located active warrants for Sons. Sons was booked on said warrants and no bail was set.
Johnnie Adams, 38, of 487 Prairie Road, Franklin, was arrested Tuesday at 10:08 p.m. on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of operating a vehicle with a suspended license.
A deputy patrolling the area of Centerville made contact with Adams walking down the street. The deputy learned of an active warrant for Adams’ arrest. Adams was transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail was set.
Jose Trevino, 28, of 203 Trevino St., Berwick, was arrested Wednesday at 2:50 a.m. on the charge of speeding and on a warrant for failure to appear on charges of possession of marijuana and operating a vehicle with an unlit license plate.
A deputy patrolling the area of Bayou Vista observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on La. 182. The deputy conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Trevino. The deputy learned that Trevino had an active warrant for his arrest. Trevino was transported to the St. Mary Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail was set.

RICKY COLLINS

Ricky “Wop” Collins, 60, a resident and native of Charenton, La. passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 6 pm at his residence.
Visitation will be observed from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 1 p.m., on Saturday August 11, 2018 at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church 1262 Bobtown Road Charenton, La. Rev. Paul Godfrey will officiate the services. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery in Charenton, La.
Memories of Ricky will forever remain in the hearts of his two children, Ricky Gable of Fort Smith, AR and Graceland Gable of Franklin, La.; one brother, Edmond Collins, Jr. of Houston, TX; five sisters, Dianne Collins and Melanda Butaud both of Charenton, La., Debbie Griffin, Marsha Shaw of New Iberia, La., Ida Mae Collins of New Orleans, La.; five grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ricky was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.
