Treasured wedding arch is trashed by callous relatives

DEAR ABBY: My daughter got married in a friend’s backyard three months ago. Her husband built an arch for the ceremony. He spent $285 on some very nice walnut, and they planned to keep it forever.
With my daughter’s consent, my wife loaned it to a niece of hers. The arch was broken and thrown out. We found this out only after weeks of requesting that we get it back. They have offered to pay the $285, but without even a “sorry.”
My daughter is extremely angry at my wife and the niece and her husband. I need words to console my wife and daughter. This has caused a deep emotional schism in our family.
WEDDING MESS IN ARIZONA

DEAR MESS: It is time to talk to your daughter about priorities. Because of her deep emotional attachment to the arch her now-husband created for their wedding, her anger and hurt are justifiable.
That the niece and her husband not only damaged it but threw it away like a piece of garbage was terrible. That they not only didn’t apologize, but also failed to recognize the sentimental value of the arch is shocking. (At least they offered to reimburse the cost of the wood.) However, for your daughter to blame your wife for the niece’s carelessness is wrong.
It takes strength of character to forgive. This does not mean your daughter must forget what happened and how poorly it was handled. In the uncertain times we are experiencing, relationships and family unity are primary. I hope that, with time, your daughter and her husband will realize this and repair the rift while recognizing the niece’s shortcomings in the future. (“Neither a borrower nor a lender be ...”)

DEAR ABBY: At the end of last year, I sat down with my parents hoping that maybe we could approach the new year with a fresh start. One short month into the new year, my mother is back at it again, ridiculing me and making me feel like no matter what I do, it will never be good enough for her.
I have reached the end of my rope. I’m tired of dealing with the constant cycle of emotional abuse. I have overcome much in my life, and I’m proud of myself for it. During times when I struggle, I reflect on how much. I keep pushing myself forward, but at this point, I’m just tired.
I have considered distancing myself, but the recent loss of my grandfather hit me hard. I have been leaning on my family to keep myself going, so I’m in a pickle.
HURT, STUNNED AND TIRED IN NEW YORK

DEAR H.S.T: You may never be able to have what you want from your mother, not because there is something wrong with you, but because she has proven herself incapable of being supportive.
For understanding and the emotional support you are seeking, consider contacting your clergyperson (if you have one) or the officiant at your grandfather’s funeral and asking about joining a grief support group. If you do, you may find the support you need while at the same time keeping safely at a distance from your mother.

Two Franklin PD inmates face arson, attempted murder charges

Two inmates at the Franklin Police Department jail face arson and attempted-murder charges, accused of setting Thursday night's fire in the department's file room, Police Chief Morris Beverly said.

Lee Butler, 54, St. Joseph Lane, Franklin, and Eric Dennis Tiger Lane, Franklin, already incarcerated at the Police Department, were arrested at early Friday on charges of aggravated arson, seven counts of attempted second-degree murder, second-degree injuring public records and contraband in a penal institution

Both were booked, processed, and transported to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center.

About 6:55 p.m. Thursday, Franklin officers discovered a fire in a file room of the Police Department building after detecting smoke, according to a press release. Upon further investigations into the cause of the fire, with the assistance of the Franklin Fire Department, contraband was located in a wall of the jail that is adjacent to a file room. Investigation efforts led to the arrests of Butler and Dennis.

Morgan City man arrested on Lafourche murder charge

A Morgan City man faces a murder charge in the Friday shooting death of a Thibodaux man, Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said.

Louis Foret, 29, of Morgan City is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Chance Benoit 38.

From the Sheriff's Office blog post:

At 1:10 a.m. Friday, deputies responded a report of gunshots being heard in the area of West Camelia Drive in Thibodaux, and officers from the Thibodaux Police Department also responded to assist. They arrived at a residence in the 2500 block and discovered an adult male with apparent gunshot wounds. The victim, later identified as Benoit, was pronounced dead.

Through investigation, detectives learned Foret was at Benoit’s residence when they began fighting. Foret eventually walked out of the residence and the two continued a verbal altercation as Benoit stood in his doorway. Foret then brandished a gun and allegedly fired several rounds at Benoit. He also walked up to Benoit and fired shots at close range before leaving the residence.

Detectives made contact with Foret on Friday afternoon and brought him in to the Criminal Operations Center in Lockport for questioning. While at the facility, Foret attempted to escape from custody, but was quickly apprehended.

Foret was booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux. He is charged with second-degree murder and simple escape. Bail is set at $550,000.

Six new COVID cases, one fatality in local parishes

The six confirmed COVID-19 cases reported for St. Martin Parish were the only new COVID positives reported in three local parishes for the 24 hours ending at midday Friday. But the Louisiana Office of Public Health also reported a COVID-related fatality in St. Mary.

That confirmed COVID-related death was the 107th confirmed with another 12 listed as probable in St. Mary since the pandemic began. The parish's COVID case count was reduced by one to 3,280 confirmed and 737 probable. Case counts are sometimes adjusted to cull duplicate or incorrectly assigned cases.

St. Martin's six new confirmed cases raise the parish's pandemic total to 4,390 confirmed with 402 probable. The parish has had 102 confirmed COVID-related deaths with eight probable.

Assumption's case count remained at 1,520 confirmed with 549 probable. The number of deaths remains at 29 with four probable.

Statewide:

--430 new cases raise the pandemic total to 364,912 confirmed with 57,375 probable.

--34 deaths were reported Friday, raising the toll to 8,778 confirmed with 662 probable.

--17 fewer COVID-positive people are in hospitals, lowering the number to 806.

Boil advisory ends in Bayou L'Ourse

The precautionary boil water advisory for Assumption Parish communities, including Bayou L’Ourse, has been lifted.
Assumption Parish Waterworks District No. 1 announced in a Facebook post just before 11 a.m. Friday the order had been lifted for Pierre Part, Belle River and Bayou L’Ourse.
“We are asking all of our residents to please still conserve as much water as possible as our system is still recovering and because there is still low pressure in some areas,” the post said.

Boil advisory lifted for Morgan City

The boil order for the city of Morgan City has been lifted, Utilities Director Bill Cefalu said at mid-morning Friday.
The city sent test results off Thursday and was awaiting word from the Louisiana Department of Health before they received notification that water again is safe to cook with and drink.
The order had been in place since Wednesday after water pressure dropped because of a combination of above average water use and many water breaks with the frigid temperatures.

UPDATED: Teachers eligible for COVID vaccine

Teachers, school support staff members and daycare employees will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations beginning Monday, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Thursday at a press conference.
Pregnant women and people 55-64 with certain health conditions will also become eligible for coronavirus vaccine Monday.
The broader eligibility will add about 450,000 people to the list of those who may make appointments for COVID-19 shots.
“[Teachers] play a critical role in our COVID recovery and, of course, in the education of our children,” Edwards said.
You can learn more about the vaccination process at https://ldh.la.gov/covidvaccine/.
The health conditions that make 55- to 64-year-olds eligible for vaccinations include:
—Cancer
—Chronic kidney disease
—Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD
—Down syndrome
—Certain heart conditions
—Obesity and severe obesity
—Smoking
—Type 2 diabetes
—Sickle cell disease
Louisiana has received notice that its weekly allocation of vaccine will again be increased, this time supplemented with supplies of the Pfizer vaccine instead of the Moderna vaccine, Edwards said.
Both vaccines require two shots, but the period between shots is 21 days for the Pfizer vaccine and 28 days for the Moderna formulation.
That good news is offset by delays in deliveries of vaccine to Louisiana this week, Edwards said.
The state was still waiting Thursday for deliveries that normally would have occurred Monday or Tuesday.
The delay is weather-related, Edwards said, and is caused in part by the closure of airports from which vaccine supplies are flown to individual states.
Louisiana has administered more than 812,000 first and second doses of vaccine. Louisiana ranks 11th among the states in total vaccinations and eighth in the number of second doses administered, Edwards said.
Officials hope the pace of vaccination will pick up with the expected approval of the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine in March.
AstraZenaca is also at work on a one-shot vaccine.
But March looms large in the COVID fight in another way. That’s when modeling suggests the UK variant of the COVID virus, which is up to 50% more easily transmissible than the original virus, will become the dominant form in the United States.
Edwards said that makes it important to continue following COVID mitigation measures, including wearing masks, washing hands frequently and avoiding gatherings with people from outside your immediate household.
On Thursday, the state reported 832 new COVID-19 cases and 15 fatalities for the previous 24 hours.
The number of COVID-positive people in hospitals is at 823, still stubbornly high but less than half the number reported in early January.
Eighteen new confirmed COVID cases were reported Thursday for St. Mary, St. Martin and Assumption parishes.
The St. Mary Parish government said Wednesday that bars will be allowed to reopen. '
The COVID test positivity rate here has dropped below 5% for two consecutive weeks.
The state remains in modified Phase 2 restrictions, including a mask mandate.
