Mayor, chief deputy to run for sheriff

Two candidates have already announced their plans to run for St. Mary Parish sheriff in a special election that will take place late next year. Sheriff Mark Hebert announced Oct. 27 that he will retire effective Jan. 7, 2018. Hebert, who served as sheriff since 2011, served over 34 years in law enforcement. Hebert said his reason for retiring was to spend as much time as possible with his wife, who is battling a serious illness. Hebert began his second term as sheriff in 2016.
