Levee district, crawfish industry reach deal for road access

Crawfish industry and St. Mary Levee District officials have reached a compromise that will give crawfishermen access to roads near levees while allowing the district to restrict people from damaging the levees. At the levee district’s April 12 meeting, the commission rescinded a previously approved resolution to allow the district to restrict vehicle access to roads adjacent to levees. The district has problems on the west end of St. Mary Parish with vehicle traffic, particularly four-wheelers and pickup trucks, damaging levees and had placed barricades and signage to limit access to roads by the levees.
