The 2019 session of the Louisiana Legislature brought a rare bit of fiscal breathing room, state Rep. Beryl Amedee told the Morgan City Council on Tuesday.
“We finally had a surplus,” said Amedee, R-Gray, as she gave a report on the fiscal-only session that ended June 6.
The Legislature had struggled with looming budget shortfalls of $1 billion or more since 2015 as the state’s economy limped its way through a prolonged slump in energy prices.
The highlight this year was a $1,000-per-year pay increase for teachers and $500 a year for support personnel, plus $39 million in additional state aid to schools,
