Bayou Vista Garden Club recognizes Earth Day
Bayou Vista Garden Club Environmental Awareness Chairman Kim Alcina placed signs along Southeast Boulevard in Bayou Vista to promote community awareness of Earth Day, April 22. Founded by the late Sen. Gaylord Nelson in 1970, Earth Day is to promote ecology and to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the earth’s environment. This observance arose from an interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. Activities can include planting trees, picking up roadside trash, and conducting various programs for recycling and conservation. Gardeners are encouraged to “go native” and use plants that grow naturally in their area, said the Bayou Vista Garden Club. Isabella Williams and Shae LeBlanc, second-graders at Berwick Elementary, placed the signs with the assistance of Alcina.
