CCHS' upset bid of No. 1 Country Day falls short

No. 4 Central Catholic High School gave top-seed Metairie Park Country Day all it could handle but ultimately fell short in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 in Division V semifinal action Friday.
Central Catholic concluded its season with a 32-12 mark, while Country Day went on to win the Division V state championship Saturday with a 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 15-11) win against No. 2 seed Louise McGehee Saturday.
In Friday’s game, Central Catholic took its lone lead of set on the first point on a Yani Johnson kill.
While Country Day led for much of the match, Central Catholic stayed within striking distance and tied the game again at 14 on a Johnson kill.
Country Day took a 24-19 lead on a kill by Kaci Chairs, but Central Catholic rallied with the next three points to cut its deficit to 24-22.
Country Day ended the set on the next point with a kill by Kelsey Dinvaut.
Central Catholic again took the lead to start game two, this time on a Johnson block for a 1-0 lead.
While Central Catholic took the lead again at 2-1 on another Johnson block, Country Day countered and took the lead for good, but led by no more than six points the entire set.
Trailing 23-19 after a Central Catholic net error, the Lady Eagles reeled off three straight points to cut its deficit to 23-22 after a block.
While Chairs countered with a kill for a 24-22 Country Day lead, a hitting error by the Cajuns cut their lead to 24-23.
However, Country Day ended the set one point later on a kill for a 25-23 win.
In game three, Central Catholic never led, but Country Day never took more than a five-point lead.
Trailing 24-19, Central Catholic scored the game’s next three points via a Sydney Williams kill and two Country day errors.
However, Country Day ended the match on a kill by setter Mary Tebbe for a 25-22 win.
