Sensitive plants such as tropical plants will suffer from freezing temperatures. Wait to prune until the spring when all danger of freezing has passed.

Put down the pruning shears.
Bring tender container plants under shelter and cover them during hard freezes. Be sure any covering extends to the ground. Remember to remove the covering when the weather warms.

We have had our first hard freeze, in fact we broke low temperature records dating back to 1907.
Herbaceous plants, like gingers, can be cut back a few days after a killing freeze. The plants will regrow from the roots if they have not been damaged.
