UPDATED: Central Catholic downs rival for homecoming; E.D. White blanks Patterson

Central Catholic’s football team put on a homecoming show Friday, cracking open a tight game with rival Hanson Memorial to win 42-20.
Otherwise, Friday was a long night for east St. Mary teams. Central Catholic was the only parish team from this side of the Cut to score a point.
E.D. White scored its fourth shutout of the season by grounding Patterson, 21-0.
Morgan City High was also blanked, losing 51-0 at Assumption. Berwick lost 48-0 at Lutcher.
In other action involving parish teams, Franklin overpowered Jeanerette, 58-14; Catholic-New Iberia edged West St. Mary, 14-12; and Centerville fell 21-12 to Covenant Christian.
This week is homecoming for Morgan City and Patterson.
Morgan City, 2-4, will take on A.J. Ellender, 1-3, on Friday. Patterson, 5-2, will host Donaldsonville.
Berwick, 2-4, will be at St. James, 2-4, on Friday. On Thursday, Central Catholic, 4-2, will play at Covenant Christian, 3-2.

Central Catholic 42,
Hanson Memorial 20
Touchdowns traveled in pairs for Central Catholic.
Quarterback Caleb O’Con scored two rushing touchdowns, receiver Vernon Singleton pulled down two O’Con touchdown passes, and running back Kye Morgel ran for two TDs and added two 2-point conversions.
But what looks like a lopsided game didn’t start out that way. It was a four-point game until deep in the first half, after Central Catholic and Hanson combined for 19 points in 104 seconds in the first quarter.
Morgel started the scoring with 7:27 left in the first quarter, punching the ball over from Hanson’s 6-yard line. The kick failed.
Central Catholic’s 6-0 lead lasted only 13 seconds. Hanson’s Brandon Loustalot returned Central Catholic’s kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown, and the Tigers took a 7-6 lead on the point-after.
That lead didn’t last long, either. Central Catholic’s Tate Fontenot ran the kickoff back 63 yards to Hanson’s 27. The Eagles were backed up 3 yards before O’Con hit Singleton for a 30-yard TD strike and a 12-7 lead with 6:43 left in the opening quarter.
O’Con opened the sec-ond quarter with a 42-yard TD. The third straight conversion attempt failed, but Central Catholic led 18-7 until Hanson’s Eugene Foulcard ham-mered his way into the end zone from Central Catholic’s 7 to make the score 18-14 with 6:24 left in the first half.
The Eagles finally broke the game open as halftime approached. They recovered a fumble at Hanson’s 49, and then a 27-yard run by Fontenot and a 24-yard dash by O’Con set up Morgel’s 4-yard TD and 2-point run.
Central Catholic got the ball back before the end of the half and ran an honest-to-goodness 2-minute drill. Singleton capped the drive with a 20-yard pass from O’Con, again followed by a Morgel 2-point run. The Eagles were ahead 34-14 and in control.
Hanson quarterback Collin Faucheaux scored from the 1 to finish the Tigers’ scoring. For Central Catholic, Jonathan Picou, who had been named homecoming king earlier in the week, got a homecoming touchdown on a 5-yard run. Picou ran for 2 to make it 42-20.

E.D. White 21,
Patterson 0
Patterson has won five games this season on the strong arm of junior quarterback Caylon Davis, the speed of receivers Kyler Paul and Howard Kinchen, and the bruising running of 230-pound Mark Hilliard, plus a lot of size and athleticism generally.
But the Lumberjack offense has to be on the field to score, and they spent too much of Fri-day’s game playing defense against E.D. White’s workman-like option offense.
A departure from that script cost E.D. White in the first quarter. The visitors drove deep into Patterson territory before quarterback Jake Sternfels dropped into the pocket to pass. Patterson cornerback Khylin Brooks stopped the drive with a highlight-reel one-handed interception in his own end zone.
But E.D. White was back in the red zone late in the second quarter, when Sternfels made the option pitch to Jace Gros for a 12-yard TD run.
Later, Sternfels kept the ball on an option to score from the Patterson 6. And running back Jeffrey Diedrich scored on a 1-yard plunge.
