Berwick makes final four in state baseball; Central Catholic falls a run short

Berwick High is headed for the state baseball semifinals after completing a two-game, 10-run-rule sweep of Grant on Saturday in Class 3A play. Berwick beat Grant 13-3 in both games of their best-of-three series, in six innings Friday and in five Saturday.

Central Catholic, down 8-0 in the fifth inning of its District IV must-win game with Covenant Christian, lost 8-7 Saturday in the third game of its best-of-three quarterfinal.

Berwick moves on to play Sterlington at 10 a.m. Thursday at McMurry Park's Field 41 in Sulphur. Sterlington reached the semifinals with a 7-3 win over West Feliciana to cap the two-game quarterfinal sweep.

Berwick has wielded big bats throughout the the playoffs. The Panthers beat Northwest 14-0 in the single-game bi-regional, beat Brusly by a 28-5 total in their two-game series, and then outscored Grant 26-6 in two games.

Central Catholic lost the opener 15-2 in the first game of its quarterfinal series Thursday, then bounced back for a 17-9 win later that night.

Central Catholic, seeded 16th in the tournament, shocked top-seeded Opelousas Catholic in a two-game regional matchup to earn right to play Covenant Christian in the quarterfinal.
