Three Berwick Panthers earn all-state recognition

Berwick High School had three senior players named Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State selections, including one first-team selection.
Pitcher Cameron Wiley was name a first-team selection, while second baseman Cody Roberie and leftfielder Andrew Askew were named honorable mention selections.
Wiley, an LSU Eunice signee, finished his senior season with a 10-3 mark and a 1.54 earned run average. In 72.67 innings, he surrendered 27 runs (16 earned) on 29 hits with 44 walks and 99 strikeouts.
Offensively, he batted .352 with 38 hits, including nine doubles, two triples, three home runs and 24 RBIs. He scored 31 runs and stolen 15 bases. He had a .474 on-base percentage and a .556 slugging percentage.
“Cameron had a really good year. … He was well deserving of the honor,” said John Menard, who served as the Berwick head coach this season before moving on to an assistant coaching job at New Iberia following the school year. “He was our guy this year. Very proud of him for accomplishing this honor, and I hope to see good things from him at LSU E.” Roberie batted 0.355 this season. He had 27 hits, including two doubles and collected 18 RBIs. He scored 19 runs and stole 10 bases. Roberie had a 0.468 on-base percentage and a 0.382 slugging percentage.
He had a .975 fielding percentage and had had just two errors this season with 31 put outs and 46 assists.
Menard said the coaching staff worked Roberie into the batting lineup after he joined the team following basketball season. “Once he got there, he was just solid,” Menard said. “He was pretty consistent all year. He did a good job defensively. In the nine-hole (hitting spot), he served as another leadoff guy for us.”
Askew batted .356 this season. He collected 31 hits, including eight doubles, one triple, two home runs, 28 RBIs and scored 30 runs. He stole eight bases and had a .543 on-base percentage and a .540 slugging percentage.
Askew had a .973 fielding percentage with just one error and 36 put outs.
“Proud of him for being able to get this honor this year,” Menard said of Askew. “He worked really hard this year. … I know he put in a lot of time in the weight room, put in a lot of time hitting, put in a lot of time really working on his game this year, and it showed.”
Chance Clark of Class 3A state champion South Beauregard was named Class 3A Outstanding Player, while Sean Richard of Class 3A runner-up Iowa was named Coach of the Year. Other first-team representatives from District 8-3A, which Berwick competed in, included sophomore outfielder Wes Toups and senior utility selection Stephen Soignet, both of E.D. White, and senior infielder of Connor Dupuy of North Vermilion. Toups batted 0.494, Soignet, 0.367; and Dupuy, 0.419.
District 8-3A honorable mention selections included North Vermilion’s Charlie Gallusser and Darian Duhon, Erath’s Brenn Faulk and Mason Granger and E.D. White’s Devin Desandro.
