Five CCHS Eagles earn all-state recognition

Central Catholic had five members of its Division IV state runner-up team earn Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State recognition.
Seniors Blake Hidalgo and Greg Leger led the local contingent as Hidalgo was a first-team selection as a pitcher, and Leger, a pitcher/outfielder, was a first-team utility selection.
Central Catholic had three honorable mention selections, seniors, third baseman Drake Angeron, catcher Thomas Garber and first baseman Mitchel Lemoine.
“I think it says a lot about where we are as a program and the respect that … people have for us,” Central Catholic Coach Tyler Jensen said.
Jensen said the amount of all-state selections exemplifies how players have accepted the coaching staff’s philosophies and are improving.
“It’s not only five guys,” Jensen said. “It’s five seniors, so it’s always good to have guys go out and finishing with all-state and all their hard work over four years rewarded.”
All five players will be continuing their baseball careers on the collegiate level. Hidalgo will join the University of Louisiana at Lafayette team as a preferred walk-on, while Leger and Angeron will attend Wharton County Junior College in Texas. Garber will play baseball and football at Hastings College in Nebraska, and Lemoine is bound for William Carey University. Hidalgo finished his senior season with an 8-1 mark, a 0.78 earned run average and 95 strikeouts and 20 walks.
Leger recorded a 7-3 mark and a 2.35 ERA with 77 strikeouts and 27 walks. He also hit .427 with seven doubles, three home runs and 27 RBIs.
Angeron batted .397 with eight doubles, two triples and 23 RBIs, while Garber hit .337 with 10 doubles, one home run and 32 RBIs. Lemoine hit for a .364 clip with eight doubles, one home run and 35 RBIs.
Senior outfielder Jeffery Elkins of Division IV state champion Ascension Episcopal was named Outstanding Player, while Michael Duke of Class 1A state champion LaSalle is the Coach of the Year. Elkins was a first-team selection in the outfield after hitting 0.636 this season. His teammate, Sean Michael Brady, made the first team as a sophomore pitcher after compiling an 8-2 mark.
