CCHS places one on all-state team

Central Catholic was represented on the Louisiana Football Coaches Association Class 1A All-State football team with one honorable mention selection.
Senior Hugh Hamer, who will join the Nicholls football team as a preferred walk-on, was named to the team. In six games, Hamer rushed 36 times for 217 yards and six touchdowns, caught 22 passes for 247 yards and two scores and recorded a kickoff-return average of 74.5 yards with one score.
“I thought he had a really good year, considering we only got six games in,” former Central Catholic coach Tommy Minton said earlier this year. “He’s one of those guys that loves football, and you can just tell by the way he practices every day and by the way he plays every single play with just so much heart and intensity that he loves the game.”
Minton said Hamer was a leader because of how he played the game.
“We put the ball in his hands a good bit because he was making big plays for us this year,” the coach said.
Central Catholic finished the 2020 season with a 2-4 mark.
Junior quarterback Landry Lyddy of Division IV state champion Calvary Baptist is the Offensive Most Valuable Player, while Catholic-Pointe Coupee senior Matthew Langlois is the Defensive MVP. Ryan Gregory of Class 1A state champion Oak Grove is the Coach of the Year.
District 8-1A, which Central Catholic competes in, had one first-team all-state selection in Vermilion Catholic‘s John Robert Allums. The senior made the squad as a tight end/wide receiver as well as a kicker.
The district had several second-team selections. Vermilion Catholic was represented by senior tight end/wide receiver Saul Dartez, senior offensive lineman Jude Roger, sophomore defensive lineman Zachary Broussard, sophomore linebacker Ashton Belaire and senior defensive back Alec Broussard. Centerville senior linebacker Morty Frederick also was a second-team linebacker.
In addition to Hamer, other honorable mention selections from District 8-1A were Centerville senior Ezra Armstrong, Vermilion Catholic senior Drew Lege and Highland Baptist senior Myles Liggans.
