Former Baldwin inmate charged in police deptartment fire

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office has arrested a Franklin man for a fire he started at the Baldwin Police Station last February.
Ray Robertson, 29, turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Jail on Wednesday following a warrant being issued for his arrest on one count of aggravated arson.
On the afternoon of Feb. 12, the LAOSFM was contacted to investigate the origin and cause of a fire at the Baldwin Police Department headquarters located in the 16000 block of La. 812.
Investigators learned through witness statements and surveillance video from the police station that shortly after Robertson was placed in a temporary holding cell, he removed a lighter and several combustible items from his pockets. Robertson was seen lighting the items on fire, tossing them into a corner of the cell, and then throwing the lighter into the flames.
Following being alerted by the building’s smoke alarm system, a police officer and the police chief entered the cell to remove Robertson and put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. The police officer was treated briefly for his injuries and was released the same day.
Robertson was taken to the hospital with burns across 30-40 percent of his body. He remained hospitalized until April when he was released for continued outpatient care. Following the completion of that long-term medical treatment, investigators obtained a warrant for Robertson’s arrest on Wednesday.

St. Mary CAA Head Start students return to classes

With a week of classes already behind them, St. Mary Community Action Agency Head Start children are quickly emerging themselves into the adventure called learning.
Hundreds of 3- and 4-years spent the last week in August getting comfortable with their centers, each other and their teachers.
The teaching staff spent much of the summer preparing to help their pupils reach academic success. Teachers and teacher assistants learned cutting-edge educational strategies that will guide them this year in the classroom, and keep students engaged and excited as they learn new academic and social skills. With the reoccurring theme of “Head Start has Class” repeated throughout all training sessions, the teaching staff received in-depth training on TS Gold Curriculum, and the Class Assessment Scoring System. This system enables participants to develop capacity and confidence in providing feedback on teacher practice, which leads to improved children’s learning and development outcomes.
CEO/Head Start Administrator Almetra J. Franklin is excited about this school year. “We want our Head Start parents and families to know that their children are receiving the very best education available,” she said. “Our goal is to challenge high quality people to provide high quality services to our Head Start students and families.”
For nearly 52 years, St. Mary CAA Head Start has been an essential public staple of St. Mary Parish, advocating family-oriented and educational services with a special interest and focus on academic advancement, strength and renewal as well as self-sufficiency for families. As the program embarks upon a new 2018-2019 school year, the focus continues to be on the children and families and building upon the strong foundation that has been laid from its inception.

MCHS-Hanson game postponed until Sunday

Morgan City High School’s Friday home opener with Hanson Memorial has been rescheduled for Sunday afternoon after referees failed to show up for the game due to an error by the Thibodaux-based South Central Football Officials Association assignment secretary.
The assignment secretary, Danny Gunn, said Friday night that he took responsibility for the mistake, which delayed the game’s start time until Sunday at 2 p.m. at Tiger Stadium in Morgan City.
“Morgan City definitely did their end (to ensure officials were there), and it was a complete oversight on my part,” Gunn said. “It was 100 percent my fault.”
Gunn, who said he was a high school football official for 42 years before taking the assignment secretary position this season, said he has a master list of the games of the 19 schools he assigns officials to. In error, he said he didn’t have the Morgan City-Hanson game on the list for this week.
“Nobody feels more terrible about this than I do,” Gunn said. “I am just devastated. It’s the ultimate mistake that I can make as an assignment secretary. These young men that practice so hard and play so hard to play this game, and I screwed it up. ”
While Morgan City Principal Mickey Fabre and Morgan City Head Football Coach Chris Stroud both were on the phone periodically after the 7 p.m. start time passed and no officials had shown up, the teams eventually left the field before it was announced approximately 40 minutes after the scheduled kickoff that the game had been rescheduled for Sunday.
“We will have officials there Sunday at 2 o’clock for their game, ready to go, and it will be 100 percent out of my pocket,” Gunn said.
Both Stroud and Hanson Memorial Coach Chris Sanders said they had never been a part of a situation like this.
“Tomorrow, the kids are off,” Stroud said. “We’ll (coaches) watch film of our next week opponent. We’ll do our normal Saturday work, but then Sunday we’re going to come at noon and get ready to play a football game.”
Sanders said, “We’ll be scrambling. We’ll be pulled in two separate directions, getting our guys last-minute ready for our game on Sunday and preparing for next Friday’s game.”
Hanson will host Westminster Christian Sept. 14, while Morgan City will host North Central on the same night.

Tri-City area winless in week 2 Friday

The Tri-City area finished 0-3 in Week 2 games played Friday as Berwick, Central Catholic and Patterson each lost.
Berwick (1-1) fell 34-31 to Northwest, ranked No. 9 in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 3A poll, while Central Catholic (0-2) fell to Archbishop Hannan 34-14. Assumption defeated Patterson 44-22.
Morgan City’s week 2 contest home contest against Hanson has been pushed back until Sunday at 2 p.m. in Morgan City because referees didn’t show up for the Friday night contest due to a mistake on the part of the assignment secretary of the Thibodaux-based South Central Football Officials Association.

Six seniors leading MCHS volleyball program this season

A year after losing two seniors — although critical pieces of the squad — Morgan City High School’s 2018 volleyball team has six seniors to lead this year’s squad.
While the Lady Tigers lost first-team all-district middle hitter Kennedy Hebert and second-team libero Allie Vincent to graduation, the squad returns three all-district selections from a season ago, led by Sh’Diamond Holly, a first-team all-district middle hitter in 2017. Fellow seniors Jolee Nini (setter) and McKenzi Smith (defensive specialist) were honorable mention all-district selections a season ago.
Other seniors on this year’s squad are Hallie Blanchard, Nia Lightfoot and Karmen Peterson.
Morgan City High School Coach Christy Theriot said that senior class will make up the core of the team’s contributors this season.
A year ago, Morgan City finished its season with a 21-16 mark, falling to district foe E.D. White in the second round of the playoffs.
Theriot said this year’s squad, like the 2007 Lady Tiger team that finished as state runner-up, has a nucleus of players but need to develop chemistry.
“I think the chemistry is going to be the ongoing thing,” she said.
Theriot said “taking care of the small things’ and communication would be critical for her squad this season.
As for individual positions, Holly and Peterson will be the team’s middle hitters this season.
“They both played club ball and improved,” Theriot said.
Nini will be the team’s setter, while sophomore Mary Vincent may see some time at setter or maybe on defense.
Lightfoot, who missed the 2017 season with a knee injury, will play outside hitter or potentially right side hitter this season. Junior Jamia Francois will either play outside or right side, sophomore Haylie Crappell will play on the front row and Deryon Johnson was working at the right-side hitter spot during the preseason.
Defensively, Smith will be the team’s libero, while Blanchard also will see time as a defensive specialist.
Sophomore Brynn Stephens likely will see some playing time on defense, too.
Morgan City, which has started its season with a 4-2 mark and already has competed at Assumption’s tournament, also will play in tournaments hosted by Northeast High, Lutcher and Dunham.
Other nondistrict games of note are at South Terrebonne on Sept. 18 and Assumption on Sept. 20. South Terrebonne was a Division II quarterfinalist a season ago, while Assumption advanced to the Division II semifinals.
“Hopefully it’s tough enough to prepare us for district,” Theriot said of her schedule.
In district, the Lady Tigers will compete against Vandebilt Catholic, E.D. White and Berwick. Vandebilt Catholic won the Division III state championship a year ago, while E.D. White was a Division III quarterfinalist. Berwick also advanced to the Division III postseason.
“I think district, hopefully it’s going to be more open,” Theriot said.
While Theriot expects her district foes to be fundamentally sound, she said Morgan City has been its own “worst enemy” annually.
“If we can play to our potential consistently, play as a team, I think we’ll do well,” Theriot said.
