Explaining Holy Week

Easter is a significant holiday for Christians across the globe. Though Easter Sunday is when faithful Christians gather to celebrate their faith, the week preceding Easter Sunday is full of significant events as well.
Known as Holy Week, the week preceding Easter begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Holy Saturday, the day preceding Easter Sunday.
Holy Week commemorates different events that unfolded over the final days of Jesus Christ’s life.
—Palm Sunday: According to Catholic Online, Palm Sunday celebrates the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. On the day of Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, residents laid palms before him, which is why palms are distributed to the Christian faithful each year during Palm Sunday Mass.
Palms are blessed at Mass, and many Christians turn their palms into crosses upon arriving home. The palms are eventually returned to the church, where they are burned, and the ashes of the palms are then used during the following year’s Ash Wednesday services.
—Holy Thursday: Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus celebrated the Passover feast with his disciples. In the story of Jesus Christ, the night of the Last Supper was the same night that Jesus was betrayed by his disciple, Judas.
—Good Friday: Good Friday commemorates the trial, punishment and crucifixion of Christ. Though the official presiding over the trial of Jesus, Pontius Pilate, found no evidence of Jesus’s guilt in relation to the charges filed against him, he ultimately agreed to Christ’s crucifixion anyway in an effort to appease the crowd and avoid a riot.
As a result, Christ was stripped, flogged and crowned with thorns before being made to carry his cross through the streets to the place where he was ultimately crucified. On Good Friday, the tabernacle inside Catholic churches is left empty to symbolize that Christ is departed.
—Holy Saturday: The final day of Holy Week, Holy Saturday is a day to remember that Christ descended into hell, where he preached the gospel and opened the way to heaven for all those who were worthy.

Best friend calls the police after man threatens suicide

DEAR ABBY: I am a woman in my late 30s. “Tim” and I have been best friends for more than 10 years. Over the last few years, he has struggled with depression and addiction, and I have done my best to help him.
A few weeks back, Tim called me crying and said he was planning to end his life. It wasn’t the first time he has spoken this way, but it was the first time he described a plan of action. Because I was alarmed, I called the police to do a welfare check. They went to Tim’s home, which is across the country from mine, and took him to a psychiatric facility for several days. Now that he’s out, he’s furious with me for notifying the police and says I betrayed him. He said he doesn’t know if we can continue to be friends.
I feel terrible, like I perhaps made a mistake by calling reinforcements, but I was more worried about the consequences of not calling. My family is telling me I should step away from the friendship altogether, but I can’t imagine doing that. Please help.
TAKES FRIENDSHIP SERIOUSLY

DEAR TAKES: Your family’s advice to step away seems sensible. You did NOT make a mistake by calling to see that Tim got help after he told you he had a plan in place to take his own life. You were trying to help him and prevent a tragedy, and that’s a good thing.
Tim is clearly very ill and, unfortunately, there is little you can do to fix what’s wrong with him (which is plenty). If you know his family, inform them about what has been going on. And because he doesn’t know if he can continue being friends with you, leave it up to him to decide.

DEAR ABBY: My brother’s wife is pregnant, and there is talk about their moving to the state where her family lives. There are only three people in my sister-in-law’s family (one is elderly and two others work full time) who may provide her with support during her transition into motherhood. On the other hand, there are 10 of us who could help them emotionally and physically if they stay here.
My sister-in-law plans on being a stay-at-home mom, which I wholeheartedly support. My brother would move to the state where her family resides only in order to appease her. Our family is closer than her family. I feel we can provide them with more love and support than her family. What can I say or do to show them that living near our family is the best decision?
NEAR IS BETTER

DEAR NEAR: I’m sure you mean well, but do not make the mistake of trying to “sell” your sister-in-law on staying. It appears her mind is made up. If she feels she would be more comfortable with her own family as she approaches this milestone, not much you can say will dissuade her. Of course, nothing prevents you from telling your brother how you feel, if you haven’t already.
You might also suggest they consider renting for a year rather than buying a home right away, to see how they like it. That way, once the baby arrives and reality hits, she may realize she won’t have the support she may need, and they may decide to return.

Berwick police make domestic abuse arrests

(Editor’s Note: The charges listed here and the narratives that go with them are provided by the police agencies that made the arrests. Guilt or innocence has not been determined in court.)

Berwick police made three arrests in response to domestic abuse reports over the weekend, in addition to a domestic battery charge in one warrant and home invasion and attempted kidnapping charges in another. The town’s officers also made an arrest on a human trafficking count.

Berwick
Police Chief David Leonard reported these arrests:
—Shawn Taylor, 42, Berwick, was arrested at 5:25 p.m. Saturday on charges of domestic abuse by strangulation, dis-turbing the peace, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of methamphetamines. He was also arrested on a warrant for possession of oxycodone, two counts of possession of Xanax and possession of clonazepam.
Officers with the Berwick Police Department were dispatched to a welfare complaint at a River Road address.
Officers learned from neighbors that a disturbance had occurred in the early morning hours. and a female may have been injured.
Officers observed clothing and other items scattered through the carport and yard area. It was determined at this point that s some type of disturbance had taken place.
After making several attempts to make contact with someone inside the home, a search warrant was secured for the residence. Berwick officers, with the assistance of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office, executed the warrant and located Taylor along with a female inside the residence.
Officers learned the female had been battered and strangled during the incident. Taylor was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamines, two types of Xanax, clonazepam and oxycodone. Officers located more suspected meth and paraphernalia inside the residence.

There were obvious signs of a disturbance, and the suspects were identified as Dex and Misty Clements. During the course of the investigation, it was learned that batteries were committed by both, so both were placed under arrest.

About 8:53 p.m. Friday, officers with the Berwick Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on U.S. 90 for speeding 70 mph in a 50 mph speed zone. The driver was identified as Bergeron, and he was found to be driving with a suspended driver’s license.
During the course of the stop, an odor of marijuana was detected in the vehicle, and a search was conducted. Marijuana and items of drug paraphernalia were located.
There was in a minor as a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop, which resulted in the additional charge of Illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a minor. It was also learned that Bergeron had an outstanding warrant through 27th JDC for the failure to appear.
—Alvin Durapau 32, Venus Street, Morgan City, was arrested at 8:21 p.m. Friday on Berwick warrants for home invasion and attempted kidnapping.
On Friday, officers with the Berwick Police Department located Durapau at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center and transported him back to Berwick Jail to be booked on warrants that were held for his arrest through Berwick Police Department.
The warrants stem from an incident that occurred March 16 at a residence on Parro Lane in Berwick. Durapau entered a residence without authorization and later tried forcing a female to leave with him in his vehicle.
Durapau was developed as a suspect, but he could not be located that night. Warrants were prepared for his arrest, and he was arrested by the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office on March 15 at a hotel in Franklin.
—Travis Johnson 45, Utah Street, Berwick, was arrested at 1:57 p.m. Friday on charges of possession of marijuana, keeping a disorderly place, violation of a drug-free zone and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also booked on a Berwick warrant for human trafficking.
Officers with the Berwick Police Department, along with officers from Morgan City and Patterson police departments, conducted a search warrant at an address in the 700 block of Utah Street following an investigation into a recent burglary.
