Sheriff: Suspect struck deputy during arrest
A 27-year-old Patterson woman allegedly struck a St. Mary Parish sheriff’s deputy and resisted arrest after the deputy detained her on a shoplifting complaint in Bayou Vista, Sheriff Scott Anslum said in a news release.
—Yvishia Levine, 27, of Railroad Street in Patterson, was arrested at 5:02 p.m. Wednesday on charges of theft, battery of a police officer, resisting an officer with force or violence, possession of marijuana and simple escape and on a warrant for failure to appear on a charge of criminal mischief.
A deputy investigating a report of shoplifting at a store in Bayou Vista located the suspect who was later identified as Levine. When the deputy detained Levine, she struck the deputy and attempted to pull away from the deputy, Anslum said.
During the investigation, the deputy located stolen items and a marijuana cigarette in Levine’s belongings, Anslum said. As Levine was being escorted to the police unit, she attempted to flee on foot, the sheriff said. The deputy and an off-duty Morgan City police officer then placed Levine in the unit. The deputy transported Levine to parish jail. No bail was set.
Anslum reported that deputies responded to 33 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Ramon Guzman, 24, of Lake Palourde Road in Amelia, was arrested at 11:22 p.m. Wednesday on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failure to properly signal a turn.
A deputy responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle in Amelia observed a driver fail to signal a turn and conducted a traffic stop in a residential area just off Lake Palourde Road. The deputy identified the driver as Guzman and smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, Anslum said. Guzman did poorly on a field sobriety test, the sheriff said. He was jailed with bail set at $2,750.
—Brad Derouen, 27, of South Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 8:17 p.m. Wednesday on charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of Xanax with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstruction of justice, violation of a controlled dangerous substance law-drug-free zone and on a warrant for failure to appear on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
—Jody Cubbedge Jr., 41, of Uranus Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 8:17 p.m. Wednesday on charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, attempted possession of Xanax and violation of a of a controlled dangerous substance law-drug-free zone.
—Brett Sanders, 27, of Lagonda Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 7:56 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office narcotics detectives and members of the Morgan City Police Department narcotics division conducted a search warrant at a home on South Road in Bayou Vista. Detectives encountered Sanders at the door, detained him, and located a syringe in his pocket, Anslum said.
Derouen, the suspect in the investigation, later arrived at the residence. When Derouen saw detectives, he threw a bag of marijuana, a bag of methamphetamine and a bag containing 30 Xanax pills to the ground, Anslum said.
Derouen then attempted to kick the illegal drugs beneath a vehicle, the sheriff said. Derouen was detained. Detectives also detained Cubbedge who arrived at the home during the investigation and located methamphetamine on him, Anslum said.
Detectives found evidence that both Derouen and Cubbedge were selling methamphetamine and that Cubbedge was at the home to purchase Xanax from Derouen, the sheriff said. The home is located within 2,000 feet of a church and park, both drug free zones.
Derouen and Cubbedge were booked into parish jail. No bail was set. Sanders was released on a summons to appear in court July 11.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported that officers responded to 56 calls and reported the following arrests:
—Drake C. Wood, 18, of Parro Lane in Berwick, was arrested at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant charging him with three counts of failure to appear for 501 Notice and a warrant charging him with two counts of failure to appear for arraignment.
Wood was located and arrested in the area of Maple Street on city court warrants. Wood was jailed.
—Shane Scott, 34, of Myra Street in Franklin, was arrested at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of driving under suspension.
Patrol officers initiated a stop on a vehicle in the area of Fifth Street that negotiated an improper turn. The driver, Scott, had a suspended driver’s license, Blair said. Scott was jailed.
—Lyneesha L. Jackson, 31, of Mallard Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of disturbing the peace.
Patrol officers responded to the area of Terrebonne Street in regard to a disturbance. Officers arrived when Jackson was identified as one of the people involved. Jackson allegedly became irate and began hollering in the presence of the officer, Blair said. Jackson was jailed.
—Herman J. Butler, 30, of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Patterson, was arrested at 9:22 p.m. Wednesday on warrants charging him with criminal trespassing and two counts for resisting an officer.
Butler was located and arrested at the police department on warrants. The warrants stem from a May 14, 2017, investigation when they came in contact with Butler in the area of Wren Street. Butler provided the officer with a false name upon initial contact, Blair said.
Butler was found to be barred from entering on Morgan City Housing Authority Property. While the officer was attempting to initiate an arrest, Butler fled the area on foot, Blair said. The investigation continued and warrants were prepared for Butler’s arrest. Butler was jailed.
Patterson Police Capt. Clyde Phillips reported the following arrest:
—Caroline P. Williams, 58, of Gabriel Street in Patterson, was arrested at 6:07 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of forgery. Williams posted $1,000 bail.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
