UPDATED WITH STORY:: Addison Grizzaffi signs track letter with McNeese State
Addison Grizzaffi, a two-time state discus champion, is missing her senior season because of a shoulder injury. Surgery was scheduled for Wednesday.
But her track and field career isn’t over yet.
The Central Catholic senior signed a letter of intent Friday to attend and compete in track and field at McNeese State in Lake Charles.
Grizzaffi took up the discus as a junior high student and, by the time she was a sophomore, was throwing farther than 131 feet. She won the 1A state discuss championships in 2024 and 2025.
Her potential may best be illustrated by the work of a current McNeese athlete, Jaslyn Russell. The Oakdale product, who competes in the three throwing events, threw the discus in the 100-foot range as a high school athlete. At McNeese, Russell won the Carl Knight Invitational women’s discus April 2-3 with a throw of 167 feet 4 inches.
“Other than having good strength, she has good technique,” Central Catholic coach David Fuhrer said of Grizzaffi. “She’s always competitive and always strives to be her best.”
Grizzaffi plans to major in radiology science at McNeese.
“She gets to continue her education at a school that’s got her curriculum,” said her father, Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi. The proud parents, “Boo” and Jodi Grizzaffi, sat next to their daughter as she signed the McNeese letter of intent.
“Boo” Grizzaffi played a year of basketball at Nicholls State and knows the demands college athletics can place on students.
But “track is the ideal sport for her,” Grizzaffi said. “You take advantage of the tutoring. You get all the help in the world.”
“I’m very excited for her,” Fuhrer said. “I’m looking forward to seeing her in college.”
Theriot signs
with Bethel
Grizzaffi is the second member of her Central Catholic class to sign a college letter.
Drake Theriot signed a letter Feb. 24 to attend school and play football for Bethel College in Newton, Kansas.
Theriot is projected as an offensive guard or center. He’s undecided about a major but is leaning toward finance.
“I’d like to get a job in finance,” Theriot said, “and maybe be a coach on the side to stay involved with the game.”
