After her marriage, Dottie moved to Morgan City, Louisiana, where she and Jay created a wonderful family life for their greatest accomplishment, having four daughters. While handling her most important task, Dottie also became a community leader during her 30 years in St. Mary Parish. Among her most important contributions was her service as President for the following: St. Mary Parish Chamber of Commerce, the first woman in Louisiana to hold this position; Community Concert Association; and BPOE Ladies Auxiliary. She also served on numerous state boards: Louisiana Waterways Commission, Louisiana Epilepsy Association, Louisiana State Convention of Elks; Louisiana State Convention of Rotary Clubs; the Municipal Auditorium Commission; Louisiana State Philharmonic Society; and Louisiana Board of Directors for the Eastern Seal Society. She also served as a Girl Scout troop leader.
During the spring flood of 1973, Dottie organized her family and friends to assist Colonel Pitre and the Corps of Engineer in their efforts to save their city. In 1974, she was the first woman to address the Annual Meeting of Columbia Artists Management in New York City. In 1979, she was selected one of five Most Outstanding Women in St. Mary Parish and received Gold Keys to both Morgan City and Jefferson Parish.
Talents led her to become a licensed florist and own her own business — Flower Fashions & Gifts — for many years. She penned a weekly column for local newspapers targeted to young people focusing on flowers, fashion and entertaining, wrote reviews for local press covering performances at the Beverly Dinner Playhouse in Metairie, Louisiana, and for three years wrote the Newsletter for the Morgan City Petroleum Club highlighting activities and events. Her social life and hobbies were closely tied to her civic life. She was a member of the Ladies Petroleum Club, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and was chosen as one of three female lecturers for Sacred Heart Church. She and Jay were active members of the Formal Group Club and Les Amis Dance Club. Her love of all things Mardi Gras led to a reign as Queen of Adonis in Morgan City as well as Queen of Excalibur in Metairie. An accomplished seamstress, Dottie always made certain she and her daughters were outfitted in the fashion of the day. She loved cooking and entertaining, and in their private home, she and Jay hosted numerous dignitaries, artists, and politicians visiting the area. Her favorite parties, however, were the endless one she hosted for her daughters and their friends, providing a lifetime of wonderful memories. Dottie loved south Louisiana, finding it a great place to live, thrive, and nurture a family. These years filled the most special time of her life.
Dottie will be laid to rest with her late husband in Morgan City. Services will be arranged by Hargrave Funeral Home and held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Monday, December 17, 2018, with a Mass of Christian Burial taking place at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services.
