ASHLEY GALLOWAY JR.

Ashley Galloway, Jr. a resident of Morgan City, LA passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023.

Born in St. Augustine, FL in 1937, also known as “Shrimp Boat City,” Ashley’s involvement in the shrimping industry started at a very young age. Later moving to Brownsville, TX and finally landing in Morgan City, LA,

Ashley fell in love with the thrill of hunting shrimp and devoted the rest of his life to navigating the seas of the Gulf of Mexico, spanning the shrimping and oil & gas exploration and production industries.

Ashley was most known for making his own way and his tenacious desire to never give up. He enjoyed socializing and playing sports at Morgan City High School, while staying involved in the family shrimping business. Oftentimes, boat captains develop a skill for getting things done with limited resources, while sailing the seas. Ashley’s ability to find a way to make things happen was undeniable and sometimes unconventional, but he always seemed to find a way.

Ashley’s lunch pail work ethic was instilled in him by his father, who ran a shrimp boat for Captain John Santos Carinhas of the Patterson Shrimp Company fleet. Ashley’s exposure to Captain John Santos’ operation enlightened him as to what was possible with a fleet of vessels and a group of tough sailors. As he grew up alongside his father, he learned the ins and outs of the shrimping industry and became one of the youngest Captains in the John Santos fleet. Ashley’s father later went on to become the “King of the Fleet” multiple times, more commonly known today as the Shrimp and
Petroleum Festival King. Ashley would also win the honor of King by hauling the largest payload of Shrimp in the season of 1960 aboard the M/V Jean Franics, named after his sister.

Ashley’s life was spent operating vessels in the Gulf of Mexico in service of the oil and gas industry. The booms and bust of the oil industry kept it interesting, but when times were good, Ashley was extremely generous. Ashley became a huge fan and supporter of Central Catholic High School. He greatly enjoyed giving kids the opportunity to attend Central Catholic, who may not have had the chance otherwise.

He had an endless amount of stories about his many nights spent out in the Gulf of Mexico, whether it was chasing “Brownies” (shrimp) or maintaining a straight line for months on end following a geophysical research vessel exploring for oil and gas. Ashley lived for the thrill of the hunt and will always be remembered for living life his own way.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ashley Galloway Sr., his mother Birdie K. Galloway, and his brother William S. Galloway.

He leaves behind a sister and his 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Ashley’s sister, Jean Frances Wilson, is the eldest of the three. His children include Ashley Galloway III and his wife Elizabeth Galloway, Georgia Landry and her husband Rickey Landry, and Summer Barousse and her husband David Barousse, Jr.

His grandchildren include Elizabeth Ashley Warren and her husband Graham Warren IV, Christopher Galloway, Drew Barousse, and Ella Barousse.

Ashley’s great grandchildren include Georgia Lou Warren and Graham Elbert Warren V.
