Steelwood Lanes in Morgan City hosted Special Olympics bowling competitions for St. Mary Parish students on Oct. 16 and 23.
The competitions offered students with physical and developmental challenges a chance to compete in “a movement for everyone that unleashes the human spirit every day around the world through the transformative power and joy of sport,” according to the Special Olympics mission statement.
In St. Mary, the competitions were a community effort.
Seventy-five middle and high school students bowled Oct. 16, and 75 elementary students competed Oct. 23.
Patterson and Morgan City high schools each sent 20 students to help run the middle school-high school event. Patterson and Centerville sent more student helpers to the elementary event.
Steve Harris, who coordinated the event, praised his fellow adaptive physical education teachers for their work on Special Olympics: Mike Giroir, Josh Montgomery, Kelly Aucoin, Evelyn Ortiz, Ely Eues and Brandy Smith.
