Dr. Poe was an only child, born on July 26, 1938 in Jennings, Louisiana, to Oliver Henry Poe and Beryl Chaisson Poe. The family moved several times during his early years due to his father’s career in the oil and gas industry before settling in New Iberia.
Dr. Poe earned a doctorate in dentistry from Loyola University New Orleans, and a specialty in pediatric dentistry from the University of Oregon. Dr. Poe operated a pediatric dentistry practice in Morgan City for decades. During this same time, he also worked as a part-time instructor at the LSU School of Dentistry and at the Peltier-Lawless Developmental Center.
Dr. Poe also served a combined 30 years of active and reserve duty in the United States Navy, earning the rank of Captain. He served for an additional 9 years in the Louisiana National Guard, retiring as a Colonel.
Dr. Poe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years in church, along delivering Holy Communion to those who were unable to leave their homes.
Dr. Poe is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Donna Beth Poe. He is also survived by his oldest daughter, Kathryn Poe Dalton, her husband, Matt Dalton, and granddaughter, Hannah Marie Dalton, of Morgan City; and his youngest son, Steven Thomas Poe, and his wife, Toni Boyd Poe, of Youngsville. His granddaughter, Kaitlyn Poe DeRoche, her husband, Seth DeRoche, and their son, his great-grandson, Beckett James DeRoche, of Groton, Connecticut; and his grandson, Micah Thomas Poe, and his fiancée, Emma Elizabeth Debuisson, of Youngsville, Louisiana.
Dr. Poe's desire to serve others continued to the very end. In keeping with his wishes, no services are scheduled at this time. He has donated his body to the LSU School of Medicine, allowing him to continue helping others even after his death. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Catholic Charities Relief Services of Houma-Thibodaux, local food banks or agencies that provide food assistance to families with children.
