Coast Guard commander: Don't use social media for search and rescue requests

The commanding officer of the Coast Guard’s Marine Safety Unit in Morgan City is urging people seeking urgent search and rescue on local waterways not to summon help through social media.

Instead, dial 911, call the U.S. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans Command Center (504-365-2542) or use VHF FM channel 16, said Mary Gilday, commanding officer of the Coast Guard’s Marine Safety Unit Morgan City.

Gilday noted that Tropical Storm Francine is expected to become a hurricane, possibly a Category 2 storm with winds of 96-110 mph.

“Confidence continues to increase for storm surge, rainfall, and flooding,” Gilday said.

“If you have a boat, (we) recommend having a mooring plan or a safe place to store your boat.”
