Funeral for Bishop Dorsonville will be Feb. 1

The funeral for Bishop Mario Dorsonville of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux has been scheduled for Feb. 1.
Visitation is planned 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Cathedral of St. Francis de Sales, 500 Goode St., Houma.
An evening prayer follows at 5:30 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by a Memorial Mass for the Dead.
Visitation will resume 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb 1, followed by a 2 p.m. Funeral Mass.
A reception follows at the Thibodaux Regional Wellness Center.
Dorsonville will be buried on the grounds of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral.
Dorsonville served as bishop for the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese, which extends west into eastern St. Mary Parish, for just less than a year before his death Jan. 19 at Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner.
A statement from the diocese said Dorsonville died Jan. 19 from “ongoing health complications related to liver disease, which was discovered late last year.”
On Monday, the College of Consultors named Vicar General Simon Peter Engurait to serve as diocesan administrator until Pope Francis appoints a new bishop for Houma-Thibodaux.
The selection process required nearly a year after Bishop Shelton Fabre left the diocese to become archbishop of Louisville, Kentucky, in 2022.
Dorsonville was the fifth bishop to lead Houma-Thibodaux since the diocese was formed in 1977.
