Southern Lab downs Eagles in football quarterfinal
St. Mary Parish’s last prep football playoff run ended Friday, when Southern Lab beat Central Catholic 35-0 in the Select Division IV quarterfinals.
Central Catholic ends its season with a 9-4 record. Southern Lab, 10-1, is the division’s second seed.
Southern Lab moves on to play third-seeded Ouachita Christian on Friday in Baton Rouge.
Central Catholic’s defense held Southern Lab, which averaged more than 49 points per game this season, to a single touchdown through the game’s first 21 minutes. The Eagles intercepted a pass in their end zone and stopped the Kittens in the red zone during that stretch.
But the Eagles fumbled on their own 20-yard line, setting Southern Lab up for a 6-yard touchdown run by quarterback Marlon Brown and a 14-0 halftime lead.
Southern Lab’s defense, meanwhile, knocked Central Catholic off its game.
The Kittens sacked Central Catholic quarterback Benjamin Case seven times and held the Eagles to a net 7 yards of offense.
For Central Catholic, Case was 8-for-24 passing for 48 yards.
Landon Ramagos caught six passes for 34 yards, and Jack Lipari caught two for 14.
On the ground, both Case and running back Cash Baker were held to negative yardage.
Central Catholic managed to cross midfield only twice.
For Southern Lab, Amriyan Asberry carried 19 times for 99 yards to lead a ground attack that finished with 253 yards. Joshua Davis scored two touchdowns in the second half.
Brown hit on 7-of-11 passes for 61 yards.
Central Catholic started the season with the need to replace starting quarterback Caleb O’Con and running back Damondrick Blackburn, who set school records for yardage and scoring.
The Eagles started 2023 by dropping two of its first three games before winning six of its next seven.
Central Catholic beat Hamilton Christian 28-6 in the bi-district round of the playoffs and then defeated St. Frederick 6-2 in the regional to earn a place in the quarterfinals.
Friday’s other Select Division IV semifinal will pit Vermilion Catholic against Riverside Academy on Friday in Abbeville.
