SLCC, Nicholls sign agreement on transfer credits

More St. Mary students at South Louisiana Community College will have an easier time transferring to Nicholls State after administrators signed an agreement Monday.
The agreement, signed at Morgan City’s Young Memorial campus, allows SLCC students who have earned associate of general studies degrees to transfer all their credits into the bachelor of interdisciplinary studies program at Nicholls.
Students who transfer to a four-year school sometimes have to repeat required classes because the credits didn’t transfer. SLCC general studies transfers will also have the chance to save some money.
The articulation agreement makes it easier for local students to get the credits they need close to home before moving on the four-year schools.
SLCC and Nicholls already had agreements, called “articulation agreements” or “two plus twos,” for students who earn associate degrees in biology, business administration, criminal justice and nursing.
“It’s an exciting day for education in St. Mary Parish,” said Tammie Moore, Young Memorial’s campus director.
“We heard Ms. Moore talk about all the two plus twos we’ve signed,” said SLCC Chancellor Natalie Harder. “We have more to come.”
Nicholls President Jay Clune, who has been a frequent visitor to the Morgan City area in the last couple of years, echoed Harder, saying more is to come.
“This place used to be Colonel country,” Clune said. “It will be Colonel country again.”
Clune praised John Wright, SLCC dean of liberal arts and humanities, and Nicholls State’s Jean Donegan, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts, for their work in reaching the new articulation agreement.
Clune, Harder, Donegan, Wright and SLCC’s Jermaine Ford, associate vice president for workforce and economic development, were on hand for Monday’s signing.
