Two longtime Morgan City leaders pass away
Two former longtime Morgan City political leaders passed away over the weekend.
Larry Bergeron, 77, a former chief administrative officer for Morgan City government and an ex-city councilman, died Friday.
Gary Duhon Sr., 72, a commissioner of the Morgan City Harbor and Terminal District and ex-St. Mary Parish councilman, died Saturday at his home after a battle with cancer, according to their obituaries.
Duhon had served as a port commissioner for a total of over 14 years.
He submitted his resignation letter from the board in October due to his declining heath after serving since June 2014. He was previously on the board from November 1989 until January 2000. Duhon was on the parish council from 2004-11.
Port Executive Director Raymond “Mac” Wade served on the port board with Duhon in the 1990s.
“We lost a very good friend and a very good board member who was very active with the port for many, many years,” Wade said.
Bergeron served as CAO of Morgan City during the mid-1980s and then again in the mid-1990s and early 2000s. He was also a city councilman from January 2005 until January 2013.
Former Morgan City Mayor Tim Matte hired Bergeron as CAO for his first two terms as mayor.
“Larry has always demonstrated a very sincere desire to serve,” Matte said. “Being chief administrative officer is a job. But his approach always was, it was part of service.”
Visitation for Bergeron will be from 9 a.m. until Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Morgan City.
For Duhon, visitation will be 5-8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hargrave Funeral Home in Morgan City. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Amelia.
