The black bear above was spotted in spring 2017 on the bayou side of Riverview Lane near Green Acres in the unincorporated parish and photographed by Lana Bailey. The bear was climbing the fence at one of the houses and didn’t cause any damage. It slipped away before animal control authorities could arrive.

A fight is shaping up over Louisiana black bears. It’s not a battle over the bears wandering through yards in Patterson, where residents are required by city ordinance to have and use bear-proof trash cans. It’s not a battle over how best to corral wayward juvenile males who sometimes wander out of the Atchafalaya Basin and into urban areas as big as Lafayette in search of their own territories.
