Local lawmakers hope for early special session

Area legislators hope Gov. John Bel Edwards will call for a special session after Mardi Gras and before the regular session to address the $1 billion fiscal cliff for the 2018-19 fiscal year when temporary taxes expire. Those temporary taxes included a 1-cent sales tax increase put in place in 2016. The 2018 regular session is slated to begin March 12. State government’s fiscal year begins July 1.
