As space becomes scarce in the Morgan City cemetery, plans are in the works to maximize available room and build a new mausoleum off of Myrtle Street.
The new mausoleum will be directly behind the mausoleum at the corner of Myrtle Street and Memory Lane, which goes through the cemetery. Mausoleums are an above-ground alternative to ground burials in which people can choose to place their loved ones’ remains.
The cemetery has 11 mausoleum buildings of various sizes, and city officials are in the planning stages to build a 12th one.
