Rotary Club scholarship awarded to WSM student

Caitlyn Chauvin, a senior at West St. Mary High School, was announced as the recipient of this year’s annual Franklin Rotary Club scholarship award.
Chauvin was chosen from 14 applicants and is the introductory awardee of a new Rotary scholarship issuance structure.
She said she plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she wants to major in psychology.
She comes from a household of seven, of which there are two sets of twins, of whom, she is one.
While at WSM, Chauvin has been involved in Quizbowl, she has been a class officer, she has been awarded: Student of the Year, as well as has been in student council, a club officer, National Honor Society member, Who’s Who member and has been on many teams.
In her application essay, Chauvin wrote, “I want to help others with their problems, to help them talk through their problems. Because, I believe there is nothing more rewarding than helping others.”
Franklin Rotary Club’s new scholarship program is reportedly geared more towards following the yearly progress of the recipients as they receive their scholarship awards in yearly allotments throughout the average four years it usually takes to earn a bachelor’s degree.
The recipients will be considered perpetual awardees during that time and will be required to come back to upcoming years’ award luncheons to receive that year’s award alongside that year’s new awardee.
In other news, Dawn Kaiser-Melancon, outgoing Rotary president, said that before next year’s scholarship award, Franklin Rotary Club is also offering a vocational scholarship to anyone interested in furthering their education. However, since they have not received any applications yet for that scholarship, the deadline for application has been pushed to August.
