Local Rec Districts Line Up Summer Fun for Kids

Summer calls for fun in the sun and St. Mary Parish offers a variety of activities to keep everyone of all ages entertained. The Tri-City area consists of Recreation Districts 1, 2 and 3, and city of Morgan City Recreation Department.
St. Mary Recreation District 1 Recreation Center is located at 2109 Duhon Blvd. in Amelia. The recreation center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with various facilities such as tennis courts, walking and jogging track, soccer field, and play-ground. Recreation District 1 also hosts Swamp League, a baseball league that occurs a few times a week from 4-8 p.m., and is sponsored by Central Catholic High School.
Siracusaville Recreation Building, located at 1110 Grace St. in Morgan City, is the home of Recreation District 2. In the summer, Siracusaville offers a six-week summer day camp for kids ages 4-16 that is open to the public.
Kids participate daily in activities such as arts and crafts, basketball and base-ball tournaments, paints, etc. Breakfast and lunch are provided by St. Mary Community Action Agency. During summer day camp, field trips are planned for almost every Friday that are both fun and educational.
However, the summer camp does include a more serious trip to Louisiana State Penitentiary and Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women. Camp-goers who are 12 and over tour the prisons so that inmates can give them a realistic view into what it is like to lose their freedom and encourage them to not go down the path of crime.
Siracusaville also has a water spray park that is open to the public.
Bayou Vista Community Center, located at 1333 Belleview St. in Bayou Vista, is the home of Recreation District 3. Noah’s Adventures miniature golf and the Swamp Skate Park are open to the public all year long with a small cost.
The Bayou Vista Spray Park, a standing water playground, will open around the end of May for kids ages 12 and under with a cost of $2 per person.
In addition to the recreation districts, the Tri-City area also houses the city-funded City of Morgan City Recreation Department. During the summer, the recreation department offers swimming lessons and summer day camp. City of Morgan City Recreation Department hosts swimming lessons at the Morgan City Public Pool, which features an Olympic-sized swimming pool, in three two-week sessions.
Registration for the swimming lessons will open May 30 and the first swimming lesson session will begin June 5.
Daily public swimming sessions will be hosted Monday through Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Adult-only lap swimming will occur Mon-day-Friday from 6-7 a.m and 6-7 p.m.
The summer day camp is offered in three two-week sessions for kids ages 7-12. Kids participate daily in activities such as swimming lessons, bowling, arts and crafts, and movies.
Lunch is provided and the camp is hosted daily Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fees are assessed for both the swimming sessions and the summer day camp. In addition to these summer activities, the recreation department hosts several seasonal activities including baseball, softball, basketball, flag football, cheerleading, and year-round tennis.
