Franklin City Council hears a wrap-up on Barry

Franklin Utilities Director Bernard Daniels reported an end Tuesday to the boil water advisory in place since last weekend’s storm, and proclaimed at the Franklin City Council meeting the city’s water—safe to drink.
He also advised complainants of discolored water that the water from the city’s treatment plant has been tested by the Louisiana Department of Health, from the city’s 18 sample sites, and has passed state safety standards every month, including this month.
The meeting agenda was expanded to include three resolutions concerning the effects of Hurricane Barry.
It was resolved to suspend until October, the requirement for Historic District Commission applications for repair or replacement of damaged roofing in Historic Downtown Franklin, due to the storm.
It was also resolved to suspend until October the collection/imposition of electrical permit fees and building permit fees for repair and replacement of roofs, in answer to damage sustained from Barry.
Mayor Eugene Foulcard’s executive report consisted of the expression of his gratitude for the service of all who assisted in the city’s safe weathering of the weekend’s hurricane/tropical storm.
“The bottom line is that the city is blessed to have such a good staff of dedicated public servants, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart,” Foulcard said. “You are true public servants who love this city and have put your lives on the line for this city.”
In other news, two condemned properties were ordered to be demolished following a 30-day grace period for possible intervention. The properties are those at 500 Sixth St. and 314 Third St.
Also, the St. Mary and Franklin Banner-Tribune was appointed Franklin’s official journal from July 2019 through June 2020.
Announcements made, included:
—Franklin’s city-wide clean-up will take place August 10 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Brown Shopping Center’s parking lot.
—A dance recital and student art show will be held July 20 at Teche Theatre for the Performing Arts. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the recital will begin at 6 p.m.
—Stop the Violence rally will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at Broussard Harris Recreation Center.
