Deputy shot at during alleged vehicle burglary

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shootout with two persons in Charenton Saturday.
At about 5 a.m. the deputy exited a residence in the area of Chitimacha Trail and Flattown Road in Charenton and reportedly saw two persons near a parked vehicle, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported.
Both individuals fled on foot. The deputy gave identification as a law enforcement officer and ordered them to stop and they fired at him. The deputy returned fire. No injuries were reported.
During a search of the area, deputies located a subject and identified him as 24-year-old Terrel Williams IV of 204 Pickett Lane in Franklin. Deputies reportedly found evidence that Williams entered onto the private property and was attempting to steal the wheels from the vehicle. Deputies also located three active warrants for his arrest. Williams was booked at 1:53 pm on the following warrants:
—Warrant for failure to appear on the charges of battery of a police officer, resisting an officer, and criminal damage to property
—Warrant for failure to appear on the charge of criminal neglect of family
—Warrant for failure to appear on the charges of failure to stop at a stop sign and no driver’s license
Additional charges of trespassing and attempted theft are pending. The shooting remains under investigation.
