UPDATED: Three teens arrested in Berwick fire
Berwick police have arrested three juveniles, ages 13 and 14, in the Wednesday fire that injured two firefighters.
One 14-year-old and two 13-year-olds were each booked Friday on charges of simple arson, two counts of injury by arson, simple burglary and criminal damage to property.
Police worked the investigation along with the Berwick Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office.
"Investigators worked throughout the day executing multiple search warrants, conducting interviews, and following up on information and tips provided by members of the community," Berwick police said in a Facebook post. "Through these investigative efforts, authorities identified three juveniles believed to be responsible for the offenses related to the fire"
Berwick police and firefighters thanked the Fire Marshal's Office and members of the community who provided information.
The Berwick Fire Department answered the call to the riverfront near Third Street about 5:47 p.m. Wednesday and found an elevated building housing offices that was fully engulfed.
Bayou Vista and Morgan City firefighters joined the effort. Their work was made harder by the lack of nearby fire hydrants. Water was moved to the site from the river and from a hydrant about 1,000 feet away.
Two firefighters were hurt. One had an injured eye, and another suffered from heat exhaustion. Both were transported for treatment, and both were recovering Thursday, Fire Chief Jody Acosta said.
