UPDATED WITH THREAT DETAILS: Franklin at Peabody football game postponed after 'credible threat'

A Saturday night football game, in which Franklin Senior High was to be Peabody Magnet High's homecoming opponent, has been postponed after what the Alexandria city government called a "credible security threat."

A homecoming parade scheduled for Saturday morning was canceled.

In a press release, Alexandria authorities said they "received verified intelligence of retaliatory threats from individuals outside of Rapides Parish, targeting our Alexandria community. The threats were specifically aimed at parade-goers, Peabody students, and alumni."

The threat included "individuals carrying long-gun weapons and a clear intent to harm parade-goers in retaliation for events related to the Super Daqx bar, outside of Alexandria."

That was a reference to an incident earlier Saturday at the Super Daqx on La. 71 South. The press release offered no details on that incident.

Authorities continued to confirm threats even after the parade was canceled. Out of town people had also disrupted emergency and other services Saturday morning, the press release said.

The Alexandria city government used Facebook to announce the cancellation of the Saturday homecoming parade, a decision made at 10:40 a.m., on Facebook.

"The Peabody Homecoming Parade has long been a treasured tradition -- one that celebrates school pride and brings families and neighbors together," the Facebook post said. "However, our shared responsibility to protect students, families, and citizens must always come first."

Later Saturday, high school officials announced cancellation of the 7 p.m. Franklin-Peabody game, also on Facebook.

"Out of an abundance of caution and in coordination with local law enforcement agencies," the post said, "we have made the difficult decision to cancel tonight’s homecoming game at Peabody Magnet High School and all homecoming festivities near the stadium this weekend. We understand this is disappointing news, especially given the excitement surrounding this special event. We will be in contact with the LHSAA to reschedule the game, and we will communicate the new date and time as soon as arrangements are finalized."
