UPDATED: St. Martin man arrested in infant's death

Broussard police have arrested a St. Martin Parish man wanted in the death of an infant whose body was found Saturday in an abandoned car in St. Mary.

Ervin Melancon, 53, of Breaux Bridge was booked Sunday on a charge of second-degree murder, St. Mary Sheriff Blaise Smith said.

About 2:30 pm. Saturday, a call about a suspicious car came in to dispatchers at the Sheriff's Office communications center. Deputies were dispatched to the car that was located near the Intracoastal Bridge on La. 317.

The deputies found the body of an infant inside the vehicle. Detectives were notified and through the investigation, Melancon was developed as the suspect, the Sheriff's Office said. A warrant was obtained for his arrest.

The cause of the infant’s death has not been determined at this time.

The Broussard Police Department made contact with Melancon on Sunday afternoon and took him into custody. Melancon was subsequently transferred to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center for booking. No bail has been set.

Conviction on a second-degree murder charge carries a mandatory sentence of life without parole.
