(Updated) One room has heavy damage, cat dies in fire
A bedroom at a Morgan City home sustained heavy damage and a cat died in a fire that started late Tuesday night, Assistant Fire Chief John Price said. No people were injured in the fire.
Firefighters responded at 11:42 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a fire in the 1700 block of Cedar Street. Upon arrival, fire and smoke was showing when the first fire truck arrived on scene within two minutes, Price said.
All of the people inside the home had escaped prior to firefighters’ arrival, but a cat did perish in the fire, Price said. A bedroom, where the fire is believed to have begun, sustained heavy fire damage. There was smoke damage throughout the home. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, Price said.
The home is the residence of St. Mary Parish School Board Member Bill McCarty. A total of 17 personnel responded to the fire, and firefighters returned the fire station at 1:36 a.m. Wednesday.
